Weekly Worker Cyber Attack -Archives Still Down

category international | arts and media | other press author Sunday September 27, 2009 15:23author by tomeileauthor email tomeile at hotmail dot co dot uk Report this post to the editors

Political Cyber Attack

For the past four months the on-line archives section of the CPGB Weekly Worker website have been unavailable following a viscous cyber attack by as yet unidentified hackers .

The savage and unprecedented cyber attack, which coincided with a re-launch of the site in June, has clearly baffled CPGB programmers and website designers .One leading expert in the field has said recently that the amount of time taken to replace missing files gives an indication of the sheer intensity of the attack.

Visitors to the lively Communist Party of Great Britain site wishing to review past online editions of the weekly paper or to read past policy statements issued by the CPGB and other leftist groups and individuals have , since June, received the following terse explanation:

“Following an attack on the cpgb.org.uk website we have taken down all old files. We are in the process of redesigning the site and old documents and editions of the Weekly Worker will be uploaded again in the near future, once that work has been completed. Thank you for your patience.”

As might be expected, the crippling attack has adversely affected readership figures .The site which invites and encourages serious and stimulating debate from across the non-sectarian left - even going so far as correcting contributors’ spelling and grammar for free- is still struggling to come to terms with the enormity of the blow delivered by the hackers. Robbie Rix from the CPGB however offered some reassurance to site visitors this week telling readers ,

“As we slowly rebuild our website, the number of visits have started to climb once again.”
