Belfast Candlelit Vigil On Monday evening 28th December, first anniversary of the ferocious Israeli assault on Gaza, approximately 80 people attended a candlelit vigil outside Belfast City Hall to draw attention to the continuing illegal Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. The vigil, which was part of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign project 'Gaza: A Month of Remembrance', included participants from various organisations and individuals in the city. The lighted candles, banners and placards which accused Israel of war crimes and apartheid and which called for an end to the illegal blockade and for a boycott of Israeli goods, attracted much attention from the crowds of shoppers thronging the frosty city centre streets. Passing cars sounded their horns in support and leaflets were distributed to a curious and concerned public. The leaflets listed the various atrocities committed by the Israeli armed forces during 'Operation Cast Lead' and pointed to the obscenity of the continuing blockade on a people who had been subjected to such brutality - a blockade which prevents the residents of Gaza from receiving essential humanitarian supplies - food, medicines, construction materials etc. The Israeli destruction of the Gaza civic infrastructure means that the people of Gaza do not even enjoy the minimum human requirements of safe drinking water, a roof over their heads and safe sewage disposal. There is a severe risk to the health of the population, particularly the children. |
