Limerick remembers those murdered in Gaza

In December and January last year Israeli warplanes, tanks and missiles struck at Gaza, killing over 1300 people, including hundreds of children, destroying schools and hospitals and thousands of homes. A year later the Israeli blockade of Gaza continues - Palestinians have been unable to rebuild their homes or rebuild their lives.

To remember these horrific events, the IPSC has organised a nationwide series of commemoration events - including vigils, film screenings, rallies and boycott actions. We hope you will join us in remember the tragedy that was the Israeli assault on Gaza.

Remembrance Tree – Limerick
Sunday, December 27th 2009

We will be creating a remembrance tree for the victims of Israel’s attack on Gaza. The idea is to create an artificial tree using an 8 foot length pole into which we will drill holes and place an array of timber dowels of varying length radiating out like branches to form a pyramid tree shape. On to the dowels we will invite members of the public, will tie blue (male) pink (female) and white (children) card cut-outs bearing the names of each of the victims. This will give a visual representation of the number killed and the breakdown of male, female and children. We are hoping to do this in Thomas Street, Limerick city centre on Sunday 27th December. Children’s Rally: Remember the Children of Gaza - Dublin
Israeli Embassy, 122 Pembroke Road, Dublin 4
Wednesday, 6th January 2010, 2.30pm
During international armed conflicts, children are afforded protection under International Humanitarian Law (IHL), including the Geneva Convention. Children are also protected under international human rights law and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). IHL provides general protection for children as persons taking no part in hostilities and special protection as persons who are especially vulnerable during war and armed conflict.

Last Christmas (Dec 08-Jan09), we all watched in horror the deadly Israeli attacks on Gaza in which 1,415 Palestinians were killed (including 318 children) and over 5,000 injured. On average, 13 children were killed each day of the offensive.

The 6th January 2009 witnessed the highest number of child deaths – 8 children were killed in the attack near al-Fakhoura School in Jabalya refugee camp and dozens of civilians (including many children) were killed in the military operations inside the Tal al Hawa neighbourhood in the south of Gaza city.

Since then, because of the illegal Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, the 1.5 million people of Gaza have been unable to rebuild their lives. No homes or schools have been rebuilt. Most children have no textbooks or school supplies. The water and sewage systems have not been repaired. People are still dying for lack of medical care.

Please join us on 6th January at 2.30pm at the Embassy of Israel to remember the children of Gaza who were killed and injured. We will read the names of the 318 children and our thoughts and prayers will be with them and their families.

We call for justice for the men, women and especially the children of Gaza.

Nationwide Screenings, January 2010

On December 19, 2008 a group belonging to International Solidarity Movement (I.S.M.), departed from Cyprus bound for Palestine. Their objective was to break through the Israeli blockade on the Gaza strip. They were the last group of foreigners that were able to enter in the territory. None of them dreamt what they were going to live through in the following weeks. This film, originally called “Erased: Wiped Off the Map” has been re-edited and retitled “To Shoot An Elephant”.

Other Campaigns & Activities

1) Letter Writing Campaign

We plan to have a constant flow of letters going to the Irish media during the month of January raising the issue of Gaza. Ken is coordinating the campaign and interested people to email him at dublinrep@ipsc.ie for further information.

2) Media link ups Irish people going to Gaza

We plan to provide the Irish media with Irish, Palestinian and Israeli spokespeople who will be taking part in the Gaza Freedom March and Viva Palestina Convoy. The aim is to generate maximum coverage both to highlight the ongoing siege and the attempts to break it, and of course to ensure that the media spotlight is on these brave volunteers in order to protect them.

3) Gaza GAA Club

As a result of the efforts of Irish activist John Hurson, the first Gazan GAA club was recently established. The club has Professor Noam Chomsky and GAA legend Peter Canavan as its presidents, and as part of the aid traveling on the Viva Palestina convoy, the GAA have donated goalposts, jerseys, and training videos for the children in Gaza who have taken up the sport of Gaelic games.
For further information, please contact John Hurson: 07875 396335 / johnhurson@hotmail.com

4) Launch of Education Document on Gaza
During the Month of Remembrance we will be launching our new education document on Gaza, written by Daniel Finn the IPSC Development Education Officer. Please check the IPSC website in the near future for full details of this launch.

Derry Anti-War Coalition will be holding a candlelit vigil for Gaza in the Diamond at 4pm on Thursday 31st. All supporters in the north west urged to attend.

The purposes of the vigil are: to show solidarity with the Viva Palestina convoy, in which five men sponsored by the DAWC are taking part; to protest against the continuing vicious siege of Gaza by Israel with Egyptian, US and EU connivance; and to commit ourselves in 2010 to campaign for the boycott of Israeli goods and the withdrawal of investment supported by, among many, many others, the Irish Congress of Trades Unions.

One more important addition. The IPSC is handing in a letter of protest to the Egyptian embassy tomorrow in response to their refusal to allow 1300 solidarity activists into Gaza.

The event will take place after the demonstration at the ha'penny bridge at 2 pm. We will be at the Egyptian Embassy at 12 Clyde road at 3.30 pm tomorrow, 31 December.

Please come along to one or both of the events and tell people you know about them. It is vital to show solidarity with the people of Gaza, and to let the Egyptian government know the outrage their actions are provoking.

Thanks

Founder of Women for Palestine and co-founder of Australians for Palestine in Melbourne, Australia, Sonja Karkar writes powerfully in Counterpunch: This is Gaza: a population of 1.5 million people kept in formaldehyde by Israel’s crippling siege. It is a human catastrophe that has many enablers. World leaders have shut their eyes to the crimes witnessed and documented countless times over by human rights groups. World media continuously sidesteps the truth and deliberately ignores international efforts to highlight the humanitarian crisis. Together they are complicit in Israel’s dehumanisation of a people ... They came one cold December day. Not fearless warriors but fearsome hoardes hell-bent on destruction of the genocidal kind that leaves no room for regeneration. That was one year ago in Gaza ... Dead bodies do not lie and neither do the maimed and the disfigured. Thousands have been left to make sense of the horrors they saw and the hollow aftermath to which they have been abandoned. Landscapes of rubble as far as the eye can see are still testament to the homes once standing in villages and towns, the homeless now huddled in tents while they wait one year on for materials to re-build. Little food, contaminated water, rationed fuel and electricity and the barest of medical supplies are just more of many cruel and wanton deprivations pushing Palestinian society to the limits of endurance.

As decent and honourable citizens of the world, we too need to speak out in shame at what we have allowed to occur for far too long. Terrible crimes have been committed and some predict that even more terrible ones are to come. The reality is that all along we have been witnessing a slow genocide and we have allowed guilt, pragmatism and self-interest to stand in the way of our common humanity. The world needs to say “enough” and refuse to indulge Israel’s Zionist leaders and advocates whose free ride has taken them to the heady heights of arrogance. That universal effort needs to begin before the bitter winter freezes any kind of hope in Gaza and it needs to be sustained for as long as it takes to free all of Palestine. Anything less, will hasten a 21st century genocide.

I wrote this tune last year as Gaza's civilians were being treated to the worst of what mankind is capable of in the name of 'peace' by other nations describing themselves as being 'democractic'.....
Israel cannot and should not be allowed to condemn Hitler or the Nazi's, while comitting genocide on palistinians without being condemned also as a hypocrite. As Bush rolled out his 'roadmap for peace' to deal with what they called the 'disputed' territories... he sent 12 F-14's to help. Billions of US dollars are given annually to Israel in what is described as aid, when the aid is spent on weapons.

Shannon airport is a vital tool in the destruction of the Palistinians and there country. Mary O'Rourke signed the paperwork to allow rocket engines pass through Shannon en-route to Israel.
Triggers for clusterbombs and landmines are manufactured in Galway. In Croke Park last year Minister Martin signed a ban on manufacture and transport of such weapons, and hailed the move as a 'definitave' step foreward.
All our politicians say they are for peace and trade on the notion that Northern Irelands conflict puts them in a unique place to understand conflict...yet they never condemn Isralei, United States, British or Irish violence against the Palistinians.
