A mast, two quarries, two power plants, a sports venue and turf-cutting

Residents of Annascaul, Co. Kerry clebrated last week when Threefold/Tetra abandoned its plans to site a mast in the village. While An Bord Pleanala had given permission for the mast locals stopped work on it in mid-August when the foundation was filled up after which they occupied an area outside the site for several weeks. (Kerryman (sic) 23/12/09, p. 21).

An Bord Pleanala has upheld North Tipperary County Council's decision to refuse planning permission for retention of a gravel quarry at Park, Moneygall, Co. Tipperary after A & R Poole Ltd. appealed the county council decision. (Tipperary Star 24/12/09, p. 9).

Sligo Anglers Association's appeal to An Bord Pleanala against permission granted by Sligo County Council to Cemex Ltd. to discharge quarry waste water into a stream at Aghamore, Co. Sligo, has been upheld. (Sligo Weekender 22/12/09, p. 10).

A decision on Constant Energy's application to Mayo County Council for a gas power plant at Bellacorick village has been delayed while the county council awaits a report from the HSA. (Western People 22/12/09, p. 3).

An Bord Pleanala has invited public submissions on Bord na Mona Energy's planned gas power plant at Derrygreenagh, between Rhode and Rochfortbridge, on the question of possible deterioration of the Yellow River from effluent discharged from the plant. (Westmeath Examiner 26/12/09, p. 9).

An Taisce has objected to an application to North Tipperary County Council by Thurles business person Richard Quirke for a 460 million Euro 'Tipperary Venue' involving an indoor racing track, 15,000-person arena, 500-bed hotel, golf course, helipad, retail and parking facilities near Two Mile Borris, Co. Tipperary. (Tipperary Star 24/12/09, p. 1).

Roscommon County Council is to write to the Minister for the Environment in support of the opposition of the Turfcutters and Contractors Association (TCCA) to ending turfcutting in certain bogs after TCCA speakers addressed a meeting of the council. (Roscommon Champion 23/12/09, p. 3).
