Dublin youth and youth workers protest Governments cuts at Dáil

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Thursday January 28, 2010 14:08author by Paula Geraghtyauthor email mspgeraghty at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

Hundreds of teenagers and youth workers protested at the Dail. It was LOUD and mental as it should be. Charlie O'Connor seemed to row with people wherever he went, insisting he was a Dubliner and that seemed to be his reason for attending the protest against his own government's devastating cuts. He wasn't too pleased when one of the future voters informed him he couldn't do his own job.

Turn your audio down- it's loud!

Youth Projects in Dublin are under threat of further budget cuts. Dublin Focus on Youth are calling on politicians and public officials to put a stop to these cuts. The campaign called a protest on Wednesday 27th January at 4pm at the Dail.

Siptu were out continuing their support of the community sector. Tallaght, Ballymun, Pearse Street, Poppintree, Ballyfermot and Shanganagh and Rathsallagh Youth Centre all showed up to show how to really burst those eardrums and protest.

More details below:
The Current Situation
•Youth Projects serve the needs of the most at risk young people across our city.
•A total of 33,790 young people participated in CDYSB funded youth projects in Dublin in 2008
•It costs €20 million per year keep these projects funded.
This works out at less than €12 per young person per week
•Youth Projects and Services help young people achieve their potential and are essential to creating and maintaining healthy communities. What we are looking for
•An immediate reversal of the 2009 cuts to Youthwork funding
•Funding for Youthwork projects and services to be maintained at 2008 levels for 2010 in order to maintain all frontline services to the most at risk young people in Dublin

"People like you" says Charlie O'Connor to correct me if I'm mistaken Gregor Kerr of WSM. It's the other way round Charlie , it's people like YOU that are destroying our communities and the fabric of our society. It's people like YOU Charlie and people of your ilk and their actions and almost psychopathic lack of emphaty that causes suffering for working people. I'm not too aware of his past actions as a TD but his behaviour from the video is pathethic. That statement and the look of utter contempt he flashed at the young fella exemplifies the mentality that we're up against in this country. A seemingly untouchable oligarchy of gombeens and their slightly more intelligent masters sneering at the 'dreamers' and 'lefties'. But hey it's no skin off of their teeth , their kids won't be walking over used syringes or going hungry and cold. Fuckers.

Great work as always Paula.

Having participated in the Demo ,which then turned into an open air disco (my type of my protest!) I am very proud to have been involved.

The energy, noise, colour and determination of eveyone there was infectious.

I was mightly impressed with the rapper on top of the van(again my type of protest).

It was magnificent to see so many young people caring so much about each other, their communities, their projects, and fighting to defend the services for the generation to follow them.

The passion and articulation of the young folk that addressed the demo was inspiring. To know there is a generation of young people determined to stand up for themsleves and their communities was a privilige to witness.

With young people like that prepared to take a stand passing the baton on to defend our communities in the future, will be in safe hands.

Well done to everyone who organised and took part in it.

Charlie is pathetic. He has a shameful defense too, ''I'm a Dubliner'', ''I'm entitled to walk the streets''.

A couple of thousands years of philosophical and political debate turns to this...
