Why do governments of all parties love raising the minimum wage? It may seem generous, but really it's a tax, says Mark Ellse. The low-paid worker keeps just one sixth of the increase. 85% goes to the government.

The New Anticapitalist Left in Czech Republic

category international | anti-capitalism | other press author Thursday March 25, 2010 16:26author by Darren C - League for the Fifth International (pc) Report this post to the editors

In October 2009 a conference in Prague took important steps to form a new anticapitalist organisation. Several dozens activists met to discuss what should be it's basis and what methods should it use. The conference agreed a programmatic platform and the outlined the proceedings which will lead to the launch of a new organisation.

The conference was called after some rounds of discussions between several revolutionary socialist groups and unorganised activists which started in the summer. The idea of a joint anticapitalist organisation had several important sources. The "desperate need to organise the fight back..." is desperate indeed:
"Workers Power is calling for a Labour vote: to keep out the Tories, and to keep the union-backed and union-funded Labour Party on the spot." (Editorial: Time for an anticapitalist alternative. Workers Power 343 – March 2010)
