Press Release: “€15 billion of cuts not necessary if wealthy made to pay their share” says anarchist

Announcing their support for Saturday’s 1% Network ‘Hallowe’en Treasure Hunt’, anarchist organisation Workers Solidarity Movement (WSM) has said that the government’s proposed €15 billion of cuts would not be necessary if the wealthy were “made to pay their share.”

Gregor Kerr, WSM spokesperson, said “The government have declared war on the incomes and living standards of ordinary people. They have declared their intention to savage our social services. They are doing so in order to protect the interests of their wealthy friends.”

Press Release: “€15 billion of cuts not necessary if wealthy made to pay their share” says anarchist organisation

“A pretence is put forward that the wealthy are no longer wealthy – that they have lost all their money. But again and again the figures prove otherwise,” Mr. Kerr continued. “The 33,000 millionaires who had €156 billion in disposable wealth in 2007 still have €121 billion of that wealth. There is no justification for taking one cent from the education budget, the health budget, the social welfare budget or from the pockets of ordinary workers and those on low wages while this wealth remains protected.”

The 1% Network ‘Hallowe’en Treasure Hunt’ meets at AIB Headquarters, Merrion Road Ballsbridge, on Saturday evening (30th October) at 6:30p.m. It will visit a number of sites and homes of figures who represent the wealthy elite in nearby Shrewsbury and Ailesbury Roads.

“This Treasure Hunt aims to highlight the huge wealth inequality that exists in Ireland,” Mr. Kerr concluded, “and to attempt to re-focus the political debate away from the slash and burn politics of all the political parties and towards a re-balancing of society in the interest of the many rather than the elite few.”
