Operation Payback: "The first great cyber war"

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Friday December 10, 2010 20:56author by Anonymous - Anonymous Report this post to the editors

Hello World. We are Anonymous. What you do or do not know about us is irrelevant. We have decided to write to you, the media, and all citizens of the free world at large to inform you of the message, our intentions, potential targets, and our ongoing peaceful campaign for freedom.

We Are Anonymous,

We Are Legion And Divided By Zero.

We Do Not Forgive Internet Censorship.

And We Do Not Forget Free Speech.

We Are Over 9000.
Operation Payback: "The first great cyber war"
Operation Payback: "The first great cyber war"

Operation Payback (is a bitch), this is the Internet, we run this. An open message from Anonymous to the governments of the world and their legal leeches regarding the motivation of the cyber protests against ACTA lawyers and those who threaten freedom of speech online.

Corrupt governments of the world, we are anonymous. For some time now, voices have been crying out in unison against the new ACTA laws. The gross inadequacies of the new laws being passed internationally have been pointed out repeatedly. Our chief complaint is that such measures would restrict people's access to the internet.

In these modern times access to the internet is fast becoming a basic human right. Just like any other basic human right, we believe that it is wrong to infringe upon it. To threaten to cut people off from the global consciousness as you have is criminal and abhorrent. To move to censor content on the internet based on your own prejudice is at best laughably impossible, at worst, morally reprehensible.

The unjust restrictions you impose on us will meet with disaster and only strengthen our resolve to disobey and rebel against your tyranny. Such actions taken against you, and those you out source your malignant litigation too, are inevitable, unavoidable and unstoppable.

A Letter from Anonymous - Our Message, Intentions, and Potential Targe

"Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves."
- Abraham Lincoln

"He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither."
– Benjamin Franklin

Hello World. We are Anonymous. What you do or do not know about us is irrelevant. We have decided to write to you, the media, and all citizens of the free world at large to inform you of the message, our intentions, potential targets, and our ongoing peaceful campaign for freedom.

"True, This! —
Beneath the rule of men entirely great,
The pen is mightier than the sword. Behold
The arch-enchanters wand! — itself a nothing! —
But taking sorcery from the master-hand
To paralyse the Cæsars, and to strike
The loud earth breathless! — Take away the sword —
States can be saved without it!"

- The Cardinal
Richelieu; Or the Conspiracy by: Edward Bulwer-Lytton

The message is simple: Freedom of Speech. Anonymous is peacefully campaigning for Freedom of Speech everywhere in all forms. Freedom of Speech for: The Internet, for journalism and journalists, and citizens of the world at large. Regardless of what you think or have to say; Anonymous is campaigning for you.
The recent news of our campaigns has been, at best, misinformed. Anonymous is not always the same group of people. The Constitution of the United States is said to be a living document, because it can be edited, amended; changed at the will of the people to suit the peoples' needs. In that same vein, Anonymous is a living idea. Anonymous is an idea that can be edited, updated, remanded, changed on a whim. We are living consciousness. We are not a terrorist organization as governments, demagogues, and the media would have you believe. At this time Anonymous is a consciousness focused on campaigning peacefully for Freedom of Speech. We ask the world to support us, not for our sake, but for your own. When governments control freedom they control you. The Internet is the last bastion of freedom in this evolving technical world. The Internet is capable of connecting us all. When we are connected we are strong. When we are strong we have power. When we have power we are able to do the impossible. This is why the government is moving on Wikileaks. This is what they fear. They fear our power when we unite. Do not forget this.

"...Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men."
- Monsignor, Boondock Saints

Anonymous' intentions are very clear. We are not vigilantes, regardless of the sentiment of quoting Boondock Saints, we are people on a campaign for freedom. Anonymous' intentions are to change the current way the governments of the world and the people view true Freedom of Speech and The Internet. Anonymous is willing, ready, and able to campaign for the freedom for all. We are campaigning right now as you read the news, watch the television, fight with your
significant other, love your children, hate your neighbor, criticize the man or woman next to you. We are campaigning. The goal is simple: Win the right to keep the Internet free of any control from any entity, corporation, or government. We will do this until our, proverbial, dying breath. We do this not only for our selves, but for the world and its people at large.

"Truth is treason in the empire of lies."
- Ron Paul

Pay attention citizens, governments, and the world. Anonymous' peaceful campaign will focus on any organization, corporation, government, or entity until the Internet is truly free.
Anonymous is doing what many successful campaigns have done in the past; a sit-in. It may be hard to comprehend, but a digital sit-in is our most effective method to show that all of us deserve Freedom of Speech and a free Internet. Our methods may appear, on the outside, to be cruel to those the entities that we are campaigning against, but remember buy supporting censorship they are denying everyone a basic human right. Any person, corporation, government, or miscellaneous entity that stops supporting censorship and starts promoting Freedom of Speech and a free Internet will become our allies. Anonymous, at this time, wants to persuade our counterparts rather than hurt them. We are campaigning for freedom for everyone, even the opposing side.
Do not fear us. Anonymous' campaign does not intend to harm the individual citizen, any organizations, any websites, or government, that supports true freedom of speech. Anonymous' past is not our present. We are here for all of you; to campaign for all of you. Where others have made this promise and failed; we make this promise and aim to keep it for everyone.
Anything attributed, credited, or tagged to Anonymous is not always what we do. We arenot always the same consciousness on a yearly, monthly, or even hourly basis. Do not believe everything you hear or read on the news. Anonymous is often credited with actions that are not campaigned for by Anonymous. The true core of Anonymous is here to help the free world for now. Anonymous wishes to represent the truth and ask that you as a citizen, media organization, or government do the same.

Article from the Guardian (WikiLeaks: Who are the hackers behind Operation Payback? ) states:

But who, or what, is – or are – Anonymous?

A 22-year-old spokesman, who wished to be known only as "Coldblood", told the Guardian that the group – which is about a thousand strong – is "quite a loose band of people who share the same kind of ideals" and wish to be a force for "chaotic good".

There is no real command structure in the group, the London-based spokesman said, while most of its members are teenagers who are "trying to make an impact on what happens with the limited knowledge they have". But others are parents, IT professionals and people who happen to have time – and resources – on their hands.

The group has gained notoriety for its attacks on copyright-enforcement agencies and organisations such as the Church of Scientology.

Anonymous was born out of the influential internet messageboard 4chan, a forum popular with hackers and gamers, in 2003. The group's name is a tribute to 4chan's early days, when any posting to its forums where no name was given was ascribed to "Anonymous". But the ephemeral group, which picks up causes "whenever it feels like it", has now "gone beyond 4Chan into something bigger", its spokesman said.

And in the BBC, along with an audio interview it reports (Anonymous hacktivists say Wikileaks war to continue):

Coldblood, who is not an official spokesperson for Anonymous, told the BBC that "thousands" of people had joined up in what he described as a "war of data".

"We are trying to keep the internet open and free but, in recent years, governments have been trying to limit the freedom we have on the internet," he said.

Saturday the infamous, international Internet hactivist collective known as Anonymous launched a successful DDoS attack against the Spanish National Police website. The attack is a direct response to the Friday arrests of three individuals alleged to be associated with acts of cyber civil disobedience attributed to Anonymous.

Immediately after the arrests, Anonymous issued a press release. ( http://i.imgur.com/Gvr8b.jpg OR http://tinyurl.com/5vbshgz ) The following is an excerpt of that release:

Greetings Spanish Government:

We know you have heard of us; We are Anonymous. It has come to our attention that you deemed it necessary to arrest three of our fellow anons, ... which you claim to be the leaders of Anonymous and for their participation in DDoS attacks against various websites...

First and foremost, DDoSing is an act of peaceful protest on the Internet. The activity is no different than sitting peacefully in front of a shop denying entry. Just as is the case with traditional forms of protest...

Regardless of how many times you are told, you refuse to understand. There are no leaders of Anonymous. Anonymous is not based on personal distinction...

Arresting somebody for taking part in a DDoS attack is exactly like arresting somebody for attending a peaceful demonstration in their hometown. Anonymous believes this right to peacefully protest is one of the fundamental pillars of any democracy...

You have not detained three participants of Anonymous. We have no members and we are not a group of any kind. You have, however, detained three civilians expressing themselves...

You are providing us with the fuel, but now you must expect the fire.

Awaiting your action,

Anonymous,

We are Legion.
We do not forgive your attacks on freedom.
We do not forget your ignorance.
Expect Revolution.
Expect us.

Turkish arrests intensify global war between hacker activists and police

The global battle between hacker activists and police intensified Monday with 32 arrests in Turkey and an admission from Spanish police that the group Anonymous had successfully attacked their website in response to arrests made there.

Anon : It doesn’t help that very few people know what a DDOS is. If they did they would perhaps understand a bit better. The way we see it is a DDOS is an online version of a sit-in. Imagine 500 anons going to Tesco and blocking up all the cash register queues and all buying a penny-sweet each or a sit-in in front of a company doorway.

Think of it this way. If you walked into Tahrir Square this morning your Irish passport would be as welcome as a Mossad armband. I doubt it would mark you as a Putin stooge if you were travelling in Chechnya.

We DID expel an Israeli diplomat (in June of last year)

We didn't "immediately" expel a Russian diplomat, we waited many months to do so.

And the Russians used copied passports of actual Irish citizens (including a From Russia With Love charity volunteer) whereas the Israelis apparently forged Irish passports but didn't use any actual Irish citizens data.

Hot on the heels of similarly politically-motivated attacks against websites belonging to the governments of Tunisia and Zimbabwe, hackers are bombarding official websites in Egypt with a DDoS attack.

The hackers' current target is believed to be the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, although at the time of writing it was still accessible.

A press release shared via Facebook by the loosely-knit "Anonymous" group uses stark language to make their demands of the Egyption government:

"Anonymous wants you to offer free access to uncensored media in your entire country. When you ignore this message, not only will we attack your government websites, Anonymous will also make sure that the international media sees the horrid reality you impose upon your people."

This is far from being the "first cyber war".

By editing and being "creative" with the "Ems Telegram" the Iron Chancellor of Germany,Prince Otto von Bismarck , sparked the "Franco-Prussian War" of 1870.

Bismarck's creative editing of the telegram pushed the blame for the war onto the French.
Some say that that war only really ended in 1945!

Time to talk: Anonymous speaks out (Irish Times)

INTERVIEW: Activist group Anonymous talks co-ordination, ops and the humanistic side of the movement

ANONYMOUS, THE largely internet-based, decentralised activist group that chooses to use hacking exploits to protest against internet censorship, emerged in recent weeks as one of the most unusual new global protest forces to be reckoned with.

The Irish Times spoke to one “anon” who was willing to talk via internet chat about their own perception of the organisation, its aims and thinking and the Fine Gael attack. All contact was made using anonymised e-mail addresses and accounts; several times the internet connection dropped on Anon’s side. The person’s age and gender are unknown. The informality of “chat” spelling and grammar has been cleaned up in the following report, as have questions and some replies.

Irish Times : You are an Irish Anonymous member?

Anonymous: I am Irish and I am anonymous. There is no membership, as you know.

IT: How does someone offer to speak then for Anonymous?

Anon: I speak only for my own experiences. Many of those are of Anonymous operations. Anonymous is something that I feel many people in Ireland will not understand at first.

Anonymous urges global protests

A group of self-styled internet freedom fighters have called for a global day of action in protest at attempts to close down Wikileaks.

Anonymous has gained notoriety in recent months for its cyber-attacks on the websites of companies it deems to be anti-Wikileaks.

Now, in a new video posted on its blog, it calls for a series of offline protests.

These are planned for major cities around the world on 15 January.

"The internet needs champions and we will rise...We are Anonymous and so are you. Stand up and fight. Every city, everywhere," the video message said.

Pro-Wikileaks hacktivists bring down Fine Gael website
http://politico.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=ar...d=877

The Fine Gael website was hacked this evening by the group of activists responsible for the pro-Wikileaks attacks on Visa and Mastercard in 2010. The bona fide Fine Gael website finegael2011.com loads momentarily before being replaced by an image (see below) containing a logo with the title 'ANONYMOUS'. Beneath the logo appears the text:

"Nothing is safe, you put your faith in this political party and they take no measures to protect you. They offer you free speech yet they censor your voice. WAKE UP! "

Observers in the last hurdles of the wikileak saga will have noticed the analogue protest events across the real world cities which have a serious cyber overlap. Others will also have noticed how Julian gave an interview on his sex-life (without saying much) to the Times newspaper which of course is pay for view so we can't link to it unless UK Minister Cable takes down Murdoch some day soon....

it gets sillier....

For the nuclear bomb option was always supposed to be the release of the 250,000 approx. cablegate files in their unencrypted form complete with N --- A --- M --- E --- S.---.......

So......................................................

¿are we now to expect the Norwegian newspaper, which some would presume are fibbing about their scoop, to explain how they came across it (& who cracked the encryption for them) & indeed to drop the nuclear bomb option & publish them all?

What kind of newspaper are we taking about, here?
Is it amongst the 5 titles declared as "Wikileaks partners"? .................(lest you forget : The Guardian, New York Times, El Pais, Le Monde & Spiegel)

here's what the editor is reported as saying :-

................"Aftenposten news editor Ole Erik Almlid told Dagens Naerings: "We're free to do what we want with these documents ... We're free to publish the documents or not publish the documents, we can publish on the internet or on paper. We are handling these documents just like all other journalistic material to which we have gained access."

Around 20 Aftenposten journalists are sifting through the file dump. The news articles are written in Norwegian, which may restrict their immediate impact in the English-speaking media world .. for a time at least............................."

Facebook of course is an organisation which aside from connecting 500,000,000 people has dealt insensitively with their privacy issues & obfuscated its own community outreach. In the last weeks (Dec. 8th) it inexplicably cancelled its facebook community council a body which had saw fit to read complaints & act upon them. Maybe once you have complained about a posting, or group for being racist or whatever - well until Dec. 8th, cyberbods with real world meat bodies attached read through them and acted upon them (more often than not).
http://www.boingboing.net/2010/12/08/facebook-community....html

Facebook had hoped today to roll out yet more algorythms which shall include the espionage rooted facial recognition system as well as hooting and bragging that its founder had made TIME person of the year despite the overwhelming popular vote going to Julian Asaunge. Julian lost out coz his effort to connect people dishes the state & establishment whereas Zuckenberg's efforts rake in advertising dollars, Holywood approval & of course...................... close anonymous groups.

odd that.

I suppose Facebook which is at this very moment experiencing difficulties in the Spanish state, French state & Latin America will be dandy later on.

that's how these things go.

it's "Ephemera".

You are all invited to an analogue protest global event on December 18th to paste & poster pro-wikileaks things across your cities, towns & shanties.

.............."Online activist group Anonymous has once again changed tactics in its campaign to support Wikileaks, eschewing web-based attacks. At least one faction of the group has urged supporters to plaster the streets with pro-Wikileaks propaganda on 18 December. The group had earlier attacked websites of firms they accused of colluding with governments to censor Wikileaks.
The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is investigating the web incidents. "

How WikiLeaks builds a global open source insurgency, By Okke Ornstein
http://www.ornstein.org/2010/12/04/how-wikileaks-builds...ency/
(link found via http://incakolanews.blogspot.com/2010/12/lot-as-been-wr....html )

“I thought it would take two years instead of four to be recognised by others as having this important role, so we are still a little behind schedule and have much more work to do.”

Julian Assange, in a Q&A session with readers of the Guardian, December 3rd.

Nobody has really picked up on this yet, but apparently there is a schedule. And where there is a schedule there is a plan. And looking at where things are going, the plan is for radical change, and it relies on an open source model.

First step, apparently, was getting the ammo.
The next step in the WikiLeaks plan would then be to create a swarm.

All this points to grand strategic thinking. With WikiLeaks now being hosted by a swarm of people around the globe, these volunteers are now part of WikiLeaks themselves – the emerging WikiLeaks tribe

By that time the “conspiracy” will be crumbling under the relentless attacks of this open source insurgency – our insurgency, really. So that we can build something new, from the bottom up, to replace it.

Article from Manuel Castells (Princeton University): The Cyberwar of Wikileaks.

"The cyberwar has begun. It is not a cyberwar between states, as expected, but between states and the civil society itself. Never again will the governments be sure to keep their citizens in the ignorance of their manouvres. Because while there exists people able to do leaks and an internet with wikis, there will arouse new generations of Wikileaks"

New York, NY, December 10, 2010 - 2600 Magazine, a quarterly journal for the hacker community that has published since 1984, is speaking out against numerous media reports that hackers are responsible for a spate of attacks on numerous e-commerce corporations as part of the ongoing Wikileaks controversy. Denial of service attacks against PayPal, Amazon, Visa, Mastercard, and other corporations and entities have been underway for the last few days, as widely reported in the mainstream media. Each of these targets had previously taken some sort of action against the whistleblower website wikileaks.org and its affiliates. The media reports almost invariably refer to "hackers" as being behind these actions. While there is great sympathy in the hacker world for what Wikileaks is doing, this type of activity is no better than the strong-arm tactics we are fighting against. These attacks, in addition to being a misguided effort that doesn't accomplish very much at all, are incredibly simple to launch and require no technical or hacker skills. While writing such programs requires a good degree of ingenuity and knowledge of security weaknesses, this doesn't mean that everyone who runs them possesses the same degree of proficiency, nor should we necessarily believe people who claim to be doing this on behalf of the hacker community. What the above named corporations have done to Wikileaks is inexcusable and constitutes a different sort of denial of service attack, one that is designed to eliminate an organization, an individual, or an idea. We find it inexplicable that donations can easily be made to hate groups and all sorts of convicted criminals through these same services, yet somehow a website that publishes leaked information - and which has never been charged or convicted of a crime - is considered unacceptable. We believe it's not the place of credit card companies or banks to judge the morality or potential threat level of anyone, let alone those who are following in the long tradition of journalists and free speech advocates worldwide. The assault on Wikileaks must not be overshadowed by the recent denial of service attacks and these certainly must not be allowed to be associated with the hacker community. This will play right into the hands of those who wish to paint us all as threats and clamp down on freedom of speech and impose all kinds of new restrictions on the Internet, not to mention the fact that the exact same types of attacks can be used on "us" as well as "them." (Interestingly, it was only a week ago that "hackers" were blamed for denial of service attacks on Wikileaks itself. That tactic was ineffectual then as well.) Most importantly, these attacks are turning attention away from what is going on with Wikileaks. This fight is not about a bunch of people attacking websites, yet that is what is in the headlines now. It certainly does not help Wikileaks to be associated with such immature and boorish activities any more than it helps the hacker community. From what we have been hearing over the past 24 hours, this is a viewpoint shared by a great many of us. By uniting our voices, speaking out against this sort of action, and correcting every media account we see and hear that associates hackers with these attacks, we stand a good chance of educating the public, rather than enflaming their fears and assumptions...................read all at http://www.2600.com/news/view/article/12037

V for Vendetta is a ten-issue Graphic-Novel series written by Alan Moore and illustrated mostly by David Lloyd, set in a dystopian future United Kingdom imagined from the 1980s about the 1990s. A mysterious revolutionary who calls himself "V" works to destroy the totalitarian government, profoundly affecting the people he encounters. Warner Bros. released a film adaptation in 2006.

The series depicts a near-future Britain after a nuclear war, which has left much of the world destroyed, though most of the damage to Britain is indirect, via floods and crop failures. In this future, a fascist party called "Norsefire" has exterminated its opponents in concentration camps and now rules the country as a police state. "V", an anarchist revolutionary dressed in a Guy Fawkes mask, begins an elaborate, violent, and intentionally theatrical campaign to murder his former captors, bring down the government, and convince the people to rule themselves.

‘Tis the Season of DDoS – WikiLeaks Edition

DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks are flying across the Internet like there is no tomorrow. Just a few days ago, a hacktivist operating under the handle “th3j35t3r” decided to single-handedly take down the Wikileaks website with a DoS tool of his (or their) own creation. He issued a statement on Twitter shortly after explaining that the attacks against the WikiLeaks website were made for “attempting to endanger the lives of our troops, ‘other assets’ & foreign relations.” According to our statistics, his attacks resulted in 1 day 3 hours and 50 minutes of downtime for WikiLeaks before the site was completely yanked offline by Amazon and EveryDNS.
