Protest Against Visit by 'British Queen'

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Friday March 04, 2011 01:27author by éirígí PRO - éirígí Report this post to the editors

In response to intense media speculation that a state visit to the Twenty-Six Counties by the Commander-in-Chief of the British army Elizabeth Windsor is to occur soon, possibly in May, éirígí are stepping up their campaign of opposition to such a visit. The first protest will take place at 2pm on Saturday, March 12 outside of the British Embassy on Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
No British Withdrawal? No Royal Visits!
No British Withdrawal? No Royal Visits!

Announcing details of a protest at 2PM on Saturday March 12th outside the British Embassy on Merrion Road, Ballsbridge in Dublin, Cathaoirleach éirígí Brian Leeson said that the 'British Queen' is not welcome in Dublin and that any plans for her to be afforded a state visit will be vigorously opposed.

Leeson said: “As commander-in-chief of Britain’s armed forces, Windsor is the figurehead of those troops who currently occupy the Six Counties and who invaded and occupied Afghanistan and Iraq, slaughtering thousands of civilians in the process.”

“The last visit to Dublin by an English Monarch took place exactly 100 years ago. On that occasion socialist republicans such as James Connolly and Constance Markievicz were to the forefront in opposing that visit. The reasons for their opposition are as valid today as they were then and éirígí will lead the opposition to this proposed visit in exactly the same spirit.”

Leeson added: “This proposed visit is designed for one purpose – to normalise and legitimise the occupation of the Six Counties. But there is nothing normal about the continued presence of 5,000 occupying troops, hundreds of MI5 personnel and a 9,000 strong paramilitary police force engaged in widespread repression against the nationalist community and those who dare challenge British rule in Ireland.”

He concluded: “The protest is being held outside the British Embassy in order to send a clear and unequivocal message for those inside to send back to their political masters in Downing Street. That message is that until there is a complete British military and political withdrawal from our country then there cannot and will not be any 'normalisation' of British – Irish relations. As such, any British state visit will be vigorously opposed.”

May i suggest the setting up of a broad front on this issue. I think anti-war groups, and all progressives should form a loose 'Welcoming Commitee'. We should try to get a few high profile people, musicians artists etc to come out from now on the airwaves to counter the fawning that has already started around the issue. Also tie it in with the current economic situation and have an angle that the irish people arent owned by the queen just as much as we arent by the IMF or EU and that it is in fact the continuation of the post colonial, submissive nature of our political leaders in this country that have got us into the mess we are in now. We cant upset the IMF or EU just as cant be seen to upset the sensibilities of the Brits.
Also hound the press for her to condemn the atrocities carried out in her name here. Durin the election Adams was thrown the tired the whole 'were u leader of the IRA or not etc' where There is no denying the english Queen is IN FACT the commander in chief or whatever title of all the mudering paid bastards that bombed and killed in this country and far afield.

If the visit of the Brit queen isnt marked by mass protests it will stand as a mark of shame against us all for generations to come. This is the commander in chief of a military that occupy our land for f**k's sake! People of Ireland, for once in your lives have a bit of pride! Join the protest tomorrow and get involved in the campaign to stop the brit royal visit!

Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth of England, Scotland and Wales has another role: She is also a religious leader and as such is on par with the the Pope and the Dali Lama.
The Head of the Church is Jesus Christ, but the Queen is the Defender of the Faith of the Anglican Church of England, under God, which means that she is the figurehead and leader of the church.
The spiritual leader is the Archbishop of Canterbury, currently Rowan Williams.
All other Anglican off shoots such as : The Church of Ireland, The Anglican Church of Australia, Canada, South Africa,New Zealand and else where have the status 'of being in communion' with the C of E.

Therefore her visit to Ireland can be seen as having a religious role, as well as being the Head of State of a foreign power.

Bright Eyes
I wouldn't welcome the Pope to Ireland. The head of an institution which for years tried to run the lives of the people of this country and to dip into their pockets to line its already bursting coffers. An institution which covered up multiple cases of child abuse and allowed thousands to suffer at the hands of pervert priests while it sheltered them. If I wouldn't welcome him, why would I welcome the "Defender of the faith" as you call her who is about as interested in visiting here on religous grounds as she is to apologise for the crimes committed by her army.

Pub owner may be forced by law to remove 40-foot banner barring Queen
By Caroline O’Doherty

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

A PUBLICAN who erected a 40-foot long banner declaring Queen Elizabeth barred from his premises may be forced by law to take it down.

Dublin City Council said it would have an inspector investigate the elaborate protest banner hanging on the front of The Players Lounge on the city’s northside and would decide today what action to take.

In 2003 the council forced builder Mick Wallace, who is now a TD, to remove a banner protesting against the invasion of Iraq from one of his sites on the grounds that it was a political statement and so did not enjoy the relative freedom given to advertising banners.

John Stokes, owner of the pub, said he would only take his banner down if ordered to by the courts which he said was a possibility.

"I believe there is an objection to the renewal of my late bar licence this week because of it so if a judge says it has to go, I’ll have to comply."

But if he intended to make a point, the publicity generated by his actions has already achieved that goal although he was critical of newspaper reports in Scotland where his famous footballer son, Anthony, plays for Celtic.

Anthony Stokes, like Celtic manager Neil Lennon, has been on the receiving end of sectarian threats and harassment recently and John Stokes said he did not want his son dragged into the controversy.

"This has nothing whatsoever to do with Anthony. I didn’t consult him. But there have been headlines in Scotland saying Stokes’s Da Bars The Queen — it’s crazy that that takes precedence over death threats to Neil Lennon."

Mr Stokes, 54, said he objected to the Queen’s visit here in May because of the cost of hosting the event at a time of economic crisis and for political reasons.

"We still have British forces on Irish soil and we still have political prisoners in Irish prisons. People can say it’s history but it’s not history yet."

Mr Stokes’ actions have divided opinions and he has been accused of insulting the British people but he insisted no offence was intended. "It’s not even personal against the Queen — it’s about her position as head of state and commander of the British forces."

Describing himself as a "life-long republican", he revealed he was named after an uncle from Tullylease, Co Cork he said was shot dead by the British army during the War of Independence. "He was 16 and he was in a field picking potatoes. Nobody ever apologised to his family."

Even if he had to take down the banner, he said he would continue his protest by selling T-shirts printed with the barring notice.

It is not the first time the pub has been in the headlines. Last year a doorman and two customers were injured in a shooting which Mr Stokes said was linked to his policy of refusing admission to known drug dealers from the area.

This appeared in the printed version of the Irish Examiner Tuesday, March 15, 2011
