If the Government isn't going to label the Huntingdon train attack as 'terrorism', it should at least change the law so mass casualty attacks are designated as more serious crimes than murder, argues Anna Stanley.

WSM : ULA new anti-austerity campaign "bizarre"

category national | bin tax / household tax / water tax | other press author Tuesday September 25, 2012 11:37author by Joe Mc Report this post to the editors

The Workers Solidarity Movement’s newspaper last week asked why the anarchist group’s fellow CAHWT campaigners in the United Left Alliance had held a press conference the week previously to announce plans for “a public campaign of resistance to property tax and austerity”. The WSM article calls the ULA decision “bizarre” .

”. For those of us who have been working alongside ULA members for over 12 months now to build the broad-based Campaign Against Household & Water Taxes (CAHWT), this announcement came as something of a surprise. CAHWT already is a ‘public campaign of resistance to property tax’ so why do the ULA (who are part of CAHWT) feel the need to ‘launch’ something that already exists?”

The fact that the new ULA campaign announcement was made without consultation with CAHWT -or even with non-aligned members of the ULA – again demonstrates, according to the WSM article, that the ULA leadership lacks the “most basic respect for democratic principles” . It argues that the defence of grassroots democracy within CAHWT must be paramount in the face of the ULA leadership’s “contempt for basic democracy”
