Wednesday February 27, 2013 09:57 by Mary McMahon - Caring for Carers Ireland mmcmahon at caringforcarers dot org Ennis, Co Clare 0656866515

Family Carers are under additional stress to meet the increasing care needs in the home, whilst maintaining their own health and other family commitments due to the challenges presented by resource constraints. The most recent cuts in Budget 2013 to the Household Benefits Package, Respite Care Grant & increase in prescription charges amount to over €13.00 per week for Family Carers.
Caring for Carers Ireland supports the Government in implementing these Four National Goals of The Carers Strategy for Family Carers. It seeks this implementation at the earliest possible opportunity. The National Conference will be officially opened by Minister of State, John Perry, and will be attended by over 450 Family Carers coming from Caring for Carers Ireland's National Network of 107 Carers Groups.
Speaking from a European Perspective, Marian Harkin MEP, long-time supporter of Family Carers, will outline current issues relating to Family Carers.
The objective of this conference is to set out the vision of Caring for Carers Ireland in the context of the Carers Strategy (launched in July 2012).
The Four National Goals of The Carers Strategy are to:
1. Recognise the value and contribution of Carers and promote their inclusion in decisions relating to the person they are caring for.
2. Support Carers to manage their physical, mental and emotional health and well-being.
3. Support Carers to care with confidence through the provision of adequate information, training, services and supports.
4. Empower Carers to participate as fully as possible in economic and social life.
