Call to develop Thematic Content Groups for Dublin Community Television for September Workshop

Can you imagine how your own community televison channel could contribute to your community's cultural, social and economic life?

Come to the Thematic Content Workshop on September 17th 2003.

Dublin Community Television's Thematic Content Groups are made up of community organisations working to develop programming for the community channel. Over the past year a number of groups have been set up and have developed ideas for programming that will support the work their organisations are doing and will benefit their community.

A workshop will be held in September to bring these groups together and to explore further content ideas. Thematic Content Groups will present their proposals, videos will be screened and community groups who are involved in producing content for the community channel will talk about their experience.

What these groups have done is to identify their own strategic priorities, then networked with other groups who want to work on the same issues. They have then submitted a Letter of Intent (see below) to DCTV to inform the organisation that they want to register as a Thematic Content group.

If your organisation would like to be involved in a Thematic Content Group or have ideas about themes you would like to pursue, you can read the guidelines 'Terms of Reference for Content Groups' and use the Letter of Intent form, both included below.

The details and Venue for the Workshop on 17th September will be confirmed and posted in Community Exchange in Early September. If you want any other information contact mgillan@cmn.ie

- Adult Education

Terms of Reference for Content Sub-Groups (Generic)

The following are draft generic terms of reference for each of the content sub-groups. These will be amended by these groups as they see fit.

The aim of each group is to provide a succinct and credible statement of value of the content (programmes) produced in this theme, and how it can realistically be produced or sourced externally. In the first case, it is probably necessary for the group to extend its membership somewhat, to include others active in the same thematic area.

A: The Theme of Programmes and Target Groups
- The theme and nature of the programmes to be produced
- Who the organisation‚s target groups are?

B: Benefits to the Organisation and Communities of Dublin City
- What are the benefits to the organisation in producing / being involved in / utilising Community TV?
- What are the potential benefits to the communities of Dublin City?

C: The Partnership that will produce it
- What types of organisations might be interested in getting involved?
- What types of organisations could be potential partners and/or potentially good partners?

D: Production and Sourcing
- How will the programmes be produced and/or sourced?
(Here, the various options from using professionals through production by the group themselves; to sourcing material from around Dublin or outside Ireland, will be outlined.)

E: The Volume and Scheduling of Programmes
- How many hours or programmes can realistically be produced and/or sourced, perhaps in different scenarios? When would they ideally be scheduled for transmission?

F: Funding and Requirements
- How would the programmes be funded?
- What requirements would need to be supplied by the Channel (equipment, studios etc.)

G: A Realistic Timeline
- Given the various factors involved, when might be realistic to get programmes incrementally on stream and ready to broadcast?

H: Any Other Information That Your Organisation Feels Is Important To Note At This Time

Letter of Intent
This letter can be sent to the Dublin Community Television Interim Steering Committee by any community organisation that wishes to utilise community television in its work.
