Reform is favourite to win the Runcorn and Helsby by-election, overturning Labour's 14,700 majority. Why? It might have something to do with having the nation's third-highest number of asylum seekers, says Steven Tucker.

Protest in support of Basque prisoners

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Tuesday March 14, 2006 13:17author by Joe - Ógra Shinn Féin Report this post to the editors

A protest will take place at seven o'clock, Wednesday 15th outside the Spanish embassy in support of the Basque prisoners currently incarcerated in French and Spanish goals, and in particular to highlight the recent deaths of two Basque prisoners, Igor Angulo and Roberto Sainz.

The Spanish embassy is located on the Merlyn park road, just off the Merrion road, Ballsbridge.

Organised by Ógra Shinn Féin Átha Cliath.

We are organising this protest to highlight the inhumane treatment of Basque prisoners, who are dispersed to some eighty French or Spanish goals, many miles from their home. At the moment there are over seven hundred Basque prisoners.

A number of Basque prisoners have been killed by the prison authorities over the years. Many more people have been murdered by armed police on the street. Two prisoners, Igor Angulo and Roberto Sainz, both recently died under suspicious circumstances while in prison.

Ógra Shinn Féin supports the Basque's people's right to national self-determination, and their right to resist foreign rule.

We call on all people to support this campaign.
If you cannot attend the protest please write to the Spanish ambassador to inform him that the Irish people are aware of the human rights abuses in the Basque country, and that we oppose his government's illegal occupation of a foreign nation.
His address is 17A Merlyn Park, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

Why 7 O'Clock? Would it not make more sense to have it during the day to maximise publicity?

The court has ordered medical tests every 4 hours to determine when he's fit for trial. The Spanish state really don't want to see him cough it on their watch

For their part ETA have communicated that the imprisonment of Ortegi will not alter their peace process (which isn't official) with the ZP regime. ZP for his part received the blessing of De Villepin the prime minister of France who made a state visit to Spain yesterday to mark this and that and 2 years of affection and blah blah. the French state completely supporting the Spanish state's current strategy on the Basque conflict. & well they hold the leadership of ETA http://indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=66860 in their prisons since October 3rd 2004 but have refused to extradite them or split the couple. O la lá. But they are very different cases to the youngest who were caught up in the conflict, armed action, and terrorism.
For their part the Basque parliament and lehandakari and all the constitional parties in the Basque have expressed their opinion that it doesn't really make sense locking up Ortegi. http://www.swissinfo.org/ses/swissinfo.html?siteSect=14...23000

the lehandakari (taoiseach) said it makes more sense to bring the conflict to the table rather than leave it on the street. C/F http://indymedia.ie/article/69891

The Irish Basque Committees support any kind of solidarity event with the Basque Country's struggle for freedom, justice and peace and want to highlight the historical moment this struggle is currently. Big efforts are being made by the pro-independence left wing movement along with wide popular organizations, progressive parties and trade unions in order to put forward a democratic process to resolve the conflict based in self determination right.

In the other hand both Spanish and French states continue to attack and undermine the left nationalists by keeping ilegal prison policies, torturing, banning political parties and social organizations, threatening with prison to leaders and interlocutors...
