The UN's Jan Egeland has condemned the devastation caused by Israeli air strikes in Beirut, saying it is a violation of humanitarian law.

but who's going to pay for it?
It seems to me "you break it you pay for it" applies. Israel owes Lebanon :-
* one infrastructure.
that sort of stuff used to be called reparations.
So, does Lebanon owe Israel, too?
On Friday July 14th, George W. Bush said he'd like to keep the current Lebanese government. So, the US government supports blowing the country to bits, while believing that the Lebanese government is not responsible for Hezbollah actions.
Israel's Prime Minister has said that Lebanon is being held hostage by Hezbollah. How then, can Israel blame the Lebanese government for the 'act of war' (Wed 12th July)?
UNHCR's Louise Arbour has warned the perpetrators of civilian casualties that they will be held individually accountable for war crimes. Will they say they were just following orders?
Currently, 37 Israelis have died, 19 of them soldiers.
More than 350 Lebanese have died, at least 330 civilians.
How much is a human life worth these days?
agreement which included peaceful Lebanon, and established one of the fleet of financial entities that do "r-e-c-o-n-s-t-r-u-c-t-i-o-n" contracts. ( I put "reconstruction" in the dirty word inverted commas because you only reconstruct things on the state level if you've planned a war beforehand)., This led to the appointment of first extra European honorary consuls acting on behalf of Ireland / Eire complete with little ink stamps and stationery. ( This thought was in fariness an unpaid position held by an Irishman. (this was in Enda o'Brien's time & women didn't do consulate dinners, speak too loudly, engage in business or walk home alone. Furthermore if they didn't wear veils in a church they were protestants and you couldn't see their ankles. If you could see their ankles they were plausibly Enda o'Brien readers). Ask your granny about it.)

A few years later we saw our first Irish UN blue hatties in the region, sooner or later they ended up in the Lebanon (UNIFIL's mandate was established by the United Nations Security Council under resolution 435 of 19 March 1978. This resolution established UNIFIL in the light of the request of the Government of Lebanon “for the purpose of confirming the withdrawal of Israeli forces, restoring international peace and security and assisting the Government of Lebanon in ensuring the return of its effective authority in the area”).
.
The Irish people were delighted.
The Irish people were very proud.
a Kathurlick nation protecting the Druze.
Though some of our flowers or manhood did get killed, they got state funerals. Years later the only gripe remaining seemed to be the suntan lotion. A lot has happened in the meantime, the late mr Lebanon Hariri took over the "r-e-c-o-n-s-t-r-u-c-t-i-o-n" thing, Ireland upped her "VIP" presence there to almost a dozen and a half, and it all has to be r-e-c-o-n-s-t-r-u-c-t-e-d again.
Are we in Ireland of the 21st century "christian" enough to return to that geopolitical failure yet again? Or have we changed as a people?
