Mickey Devine Plaque Unveiling in Short Strand.

Belfast IRSP have today announced their plans to unveil both a plaque and mural dedicated to INLA Vol. and 1981 Hungerstriker Mickey Devine and his nine brave comrades in the Short Strand area of Belfast this weekend.

Belfast IRSP spokesperson Charlie Clarke states, “The Short Strand based Power / O’Reilly Cumann of the IRSP have unveiled plans today to unveil both a plaque and mural dedicated to the memories of INLA Vol. and 1981 Hungerstriker Mickey Devine and his nine brave comrades on Sunday 27th August 2006 at 4pm and is leaving from Mount Pottinger shops.

“This event is to be the conclusion to the IRSP organised tributes marking the 25th Anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike in Long Kesh gaol, in which we have witnessed spectacular commemorations throughout the country in recent weeks.

He went on to add “The IRSP wish to conclude our anniversary tribute to these ten brave men with this last event. This is to be the first IRSP commemoration of this magnitude to be held in the Short Strand area of Belfast, and is expected to be talked about for many years to come. We commend the Power / O’Reilly Cumann for their tireless efforts in the organising of this event.

“We wish to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to Michael Devine Jr, and John Nixon (former INLA hunger striker) in advance who will both be speaking at this event. We also wish to tender our invitation to all members of the Republican traditions to join with us in commemorating these brave volunteers.

Mr Clarke concluded “Sunday is about remembering ten young and selfless men from different Republican traditions who gave their all for a common cause. To quote our comrade Eddie Mc Garrigle ‘it would be a mistake to think that what was at stake during the hunger strikes was fundamentally about the five demands. The hunger strikes were a struggle for the legitimacy of the Irish struggle for national and social liberation. It was about whether resistance to oppression was criminal in nature’.
We urge everyone to be in attendance. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided afterwards.”

STATEMENT ENDS.
