Tara Vigil - Urgent Call For Solidarity

category meath | history and heritage | press release author Thursday September 07, 2006 22:27author by Helen Rose Report this post to the editors

Vigil Keepers have been asked to leave the Hill of Tara

7th September 2006

Tara Vigil - Urgent Call For Solidarity

Today at 5.20pm two men from the O.P.W. came to the Vigil Fire telling us we have until tomorrow, Friday 8th September, to leave or they will be forced to get the authorities. They said they are giving us 'our chance to quit and leave, as we are on a national monument'.
We have been waiting for the Guardai to return since the 14th July, when they were at the Fire acting on a complaint made by the O.P.W. Reference was made to the Housing Bill(miscellaneous provisions) 2002, but as we have no permanent structures or vehicles and said we were asserting our rights under article 9 of the European Convention which states we are entitled to express our religious beliefs, the Guardai left to look up the legislation and have not returned since.
As we said we would, we moved the location of the Vigil Fire on Lunasa August 2nd. The symbolic fire which has been lit since the Summer Solstice June 21st still burns.
We ask for a show of solidarity at the Fire tomorrow, and would appreciate for you to pass on this call.

With Thanks, Tara Solidarity Vigil.

I've just recieved the above release from the Vigil. Were hoping for 48 hours written notice to be served tomorrow, rather than a dramatic eviction. There is a gathering of musicians at the Fire this evening...which also happens to be full moon!
Please try and visit the Vigil Fire if you can, this Friday it will have been burning on Tara for 80 days. As far as I know this is unprecedented in recent times and has promoted healing of the Land and the People. Your support and assistance in the coming days will be much appreciated.

As stated before, I think the time has come to relocate the vigil camp to a location closer to the actual motorway construction zone. Their is no threat to the hill itself, consequently there is no no need to keep a camp up there.

But I still hope people will come out to the threatened Vigil camp, expressing their solidarity with the vigil keepers, defying the outrageous demands made by the OPW . How dare of those government thugs telling Irish citizens that they can't camp on land belonging to the Irish people!
