The UK?s Crisis Point is Fast Approaching Thu Jul 03, 2025 19:30 | Dr David McGrogan
Starmer's failure to achieve even the tiniest gesture towards welfare reform in the fiscally incontinent UK is a symptom of a much deeper political malaise, says Dr David McGrogan. The crisis point is fast approaching.

Why are Dubliners so much against contributing to the maintainance and up-keep of their city?
The rest of the Irish Population accept the need to pay water charges and bin charges.
Arguably Dubliners have better services and greater access to them than the rest of us (eg Luas in the picture, beautiful parks etc) so Why are Dubliners so reluctant to pay?
As a limerick man I also opose bin charges. They should be fought throughout the country. A victory in Dublin would be a victory for the ntire country, a with water charges. ubnfortunately it is not realy on the cards now, the great oppurtunity was losty patly due to the false tactics of groups like the SWP.
Thanks,
Cian
They are not really against bin charges. What they are against is paying a utility rate each year and having to pay bin charges.. Utility rates cover bin charges, water and sewage. This is my take on the situation anyway.
And it's a pity that there are so many cynics that have no interest in their environment or participating in democracy and are quite happy to let private business interests dictate everything and destroy our environment.
I think it is great to see people out protesting, because it usually means they are awake and have a conscious and have thought about things and actually care about something rather than people on the side who feel so empty and worthless that they have to make what they think are smart and funny remarks to get attention and when in fact it just shows them up for what they are.
I have not had an opportunity to get on to the Indy site for a while. I was interested to read some of the comments on this link. Every tax payer in this Country contributes for our services every day of our working lives through our taxes. It is an effective way to collectively provide for basic services like waste collection, lighting etc.VAT is also suppoesed to be used for this purpose. Governments here to fore paid a rate support grant to Councils from our taxes to provide such services. Over the last decade in particular the present Government is attempting and has in many areas broke this basic collective provision of services, esentially to line their wealthy clic of friends pockets. The introduction of a myriad of tax loops ie tax relief for building private hospitals and nursing homes, tax relief for investing in horses, section 23, selling off our natural resources to multinationals and they pay practically no tax to the local Government, and loads more. In effect the wealthiest do not pay taxes. In the meantime they reduce our tax and introduce another myriad of stealth taxes. Bin tax, motor tax, road tax, etc Over the last number of years stealth taxes make up more and more of the tax take by Govermnet. People are not stupid, stealth taxes benefit the wealthy rather than the average worker on a minimum wage or the industrial wage. €1000 a year is nothing to someone who pays no tax and making millions but is too the likes of me and you. People are opposed to the bin tax because it is an unjust double stealth tax.
It is posed as an environmental tax!!!! If this Government were serious they would have implemented the Waste management legislation 1996. Enforce industry to use recycable packaging. Set up a national recycling centre(s), Introduced a regular green bin collection(because all our packaging would be recycable) and accesable recyling centres. Maintain our waste collection by Councils workers, but they are not serious. They stopped paying the rate support grant to Councils, which gave the green light to Councils to privatise or tax the Council service. There is no collective plan on recycling, industry are still producing non recycable packaging which means we the housholder have to pay for getting rid of this waste. Incineration is been foisted on Communities when in reality we dont need the amount of incineration if 90% of our waste was recycable. In other words this Governments policy is tax and incinerate. Rather than provide essential services through our taxes (the budget surples accumulated over the last 10 years is over €45 billion) and move as close to zero un recycable waste as possible through an effective waste policy. Sorry about going on so long. We will still be out protesting and we are not paying.
