SPEECH BY ESTAT CATALÀ IN THE UNITARY ACT COMMEMORATING THE 80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRATS DE MOLLÓ EVENTS. 22 OF OCTOBER OF 2006
----------------------------------

PARLAMENT D’ESTAT CATALÀ EN L’ACTE UNITARI DEL
80è ANIVERSARI DEL FETS DE PRATS DE MOLLÓ

SPEECH BY ESTAT CATALÀ IN THE UNITARY ACT COMMEMORATING THE 80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRATS DE MOLLÓ EVENTS
22 OF OCTOBER OF 2006

I will read a summary of the statement that Francesc Macià was about to read after pronouncing the independence:

TO THE FREE NATIONS OF THE WORLD, GREETINGS!

Is Catalonia the one that today is greeting you, free nations of the world, at the time of rousing up in arms to defend its imprescriptibly right to be governed by itself.
^….
We want Catalonia for all Catalan people!
We want a modern culture for our children, for our workers and for our higher education.
We want the utmost improved conditions for our proletarian.
We want to manage ourselves our national wealth, in an independent Catalan Republic.
Be it known around the world that we are not guided by a feeling of hate against the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, neither by a feeling of imperialism and conquest. After being free, we would be lucky to help the other peoples in Spain that suffer under the same regime of reaction, so as to finally manage to get them free.
We want to throw off the chains that subdue us by force together with them and replace these chains with free and brotherly ties that allow us to work together for international peace. Because it is for this international peace that, as a last resort, we are rousing up in arms.
And it is to you, free peoples around the world, that we are addressing in first place, the greetings and our scream of anguish, asking you to recognize our right to become free. We are doing it full of hope and faith in freedom and justice, this basic principle of the international law for the cooperation, not forced, but free and friendly, of all the peoples for civil equality, against any privilege and tyranny. We are convinced that peace in Europe will not be guaranteed while the force of armies is exclusively supporting imperialism and while the rights of small nations to act by themselves is not guaranteed.
For the right of peoples and humankind!
For international peace!
Greetings!

Francesc Macià, Prats de Molló 1926.

Nowadays, 80 years later, this statement held by the Catalan volunteers leaded by Francesc Macià, is still fully in force.

Unfortunately, today we are still a subjugated people, a people lacking in freedom!

It is today and here, commemorating this 80th anniversary, that we, women and men from Estat Català, are willing to state that we remain faithful to the struggle for the independence of Catalonia.

We want to homage all Catalan fighters that suffered repression, especially those who lost their lives fighting for the freedom of our people.

In this 80th anniversary, we want to have a very special memory for Catalan patriot Salvador Galobardes i Fuentes who took part with Francesc Macià in the Prats de Molló expedition; he was imprisoned and thrown up to France together with the other volunteers, later he fighted to defend Catalonia against fascism and died in a Nazi extermination camp together with other 56 members of Estat Català.

That his experience and his sacrifice be an example for us so as not to become disheartened in the struggle for the independence of Catalonia.

Thank you!

Catalonia held its parliamentary elections on November 1.
Just over 5 million people were entitled to vote. I am one of the other 3 million who are not allowed that right but must bear the duty of taxation, which is a bit galling more over when I sit on local community consultation groups & belong to the tiny minority of "foreigners" who speaks & works in both Catalan & Castillian languages.
Of those approx 5 million just 56.77% bothered to cast a ballot.
And the results were pretty much the same as last time. But one new party contested the elections "cuitadans". & to everyones' surprise they won 3 seats (all in Barcelona). Their basic party line is anti-nationalism in the words of their leader (a 30 something lawyer) on election night :- "We want a society where it doesn't matter which official language you speak, and where you can be both Catalan and Spanish & no-one call you a fascist".

I doubt they're a political force which make much of a mark - but their entry to the Parliament has certainly made a point. One which was rubbed in by ERC (The republican independence party) losing 2 seats. Interestingly the best of the lot ICV-EaU (the greenie marxist catalan but spanish republicans) increased their share of the vote taking 9 seats.

No mention of the disposessed, the Andaluz workers, the Maghrebin workers, Jews, Albanians and other central and eastern Europeans, all living in shit at the service of the Catalan bourgeoisie. Not to mention the situation of the Gitanos, all of whom have contributed to Catalunya's beauty and riches but who are sniffed at because they are not 'catalan' . What we have here is just nineteenth century chauvinistic nationalistic nonsense which holds that Catalans have a monopoly on suffering and that statehood will solve all ills. A recipe for disaster which smacks of national-socialism. Luckily this group is insignificant politically.
