Full house for Caoimhe Butterly

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Monday February 05, 2007 17:02author by Eco Soc Galway Report this post to the editors

Public meeting on Thursday 1st February.

Eco -Soc Galway and SPUNOUT were delighted to host inspirational anti -war campaigner Caoimhe Butterly last week.
In a talk entitled 'Peace War and Media' Caoimhe gave a human dimension to recent events in Lebanon. Photos of scenes from the southern Lebanon area where she is currently based showed faces and families directly affected by the Israeli Defence Forces bombing this summer. The recent Sit-in protests in Beirut came dramatically to life from her words and photos.A livley question and answer session chaired by Lelia Doolin brought the talk to its conclusion.

The town hall studio's eighty seats were not enough to fit all of those who turned up to hear Caoimhe and we wish to extend our apologies to those who were not admitted. As the event was filmed we hope to be able to make this available shortly to those who wish to see and hear what she had to say.Details will be posted here.
Those wishing to Donate to Caoimhes Organisation may do so by contacting the above address.
Our thanks to Caoimhe Butterly, Lelia Doolin and all at the Town Hall.

Caoimhe spoke to great Anti-War Ireland meetings also in Cork, Belfast and Dublin. Very good speaker who brought home the reality of war and civic resistance & resiliance in Lebanon. Realistic, upbeat and certainly encouraging for those working around these issues here in Ireland.

May the road rise with her.

Well done to Caoimhe and all those involved in Galway. We had a similar show in Glenamoy organised by the Rossport Solidarity Camp, and the well-attended talk and slideshow really put into perspective our own problems in Erris... we may get pushed and kicked around a bit by Shell's cops, but at least we get home to our families in one piece!

It was inspiring to see and hear of the hope shown by terribly oppressed people, and it should not only be a lesson to us all but a call to get involved in the struggles of all communities under threat.
