When politicians claim the public supports extreme measures like banning meat or digital ID you can be sure that behind it is a Citizens' Assembly or other dubious method for manufacturing 'consent', says Alex Klaushofer.

Greens have hijacked environmental concern and turned it into a branch of radical Leftist politics. But in truth conservatism cares about conserving our home. Conservatives need to reclaim green politics, says Sean Walsh.

Egyptian blogger jailed for insulting islam

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Thursday February 22, 2007 11:38author by Mario Buda Report this post to the editors

This is truly appalling. Imagine if you could be imprisoned for criticising the Roman Catholic Church or Bertie? Protest to the Egyptian Embassy at the address below.

An Egyptian court has sentenced an internet blogger to four years' prison for insulting Islam and the president.

Abdul Karim Nabil used his weblog to criticise the country's top Islamic institution, the al-Azhar university and President Hosni Mubarak.

If we truly believe in democracy, human rights, freedom of speech, feminism, gay rights, women's rights etc etc. then logically when individuals and groups who share our ideology and seek change in their societies are persecuted we must stand up for them using ever possible channel to influence those in power to act and protect them or at the very least make life difficult for those who are persecuting them.

In recent years I have been horrified at how leftist liberals in many Middle Eastern countries have been shunned while many Western leftist liberals sympathise with the likes of Hezbollah and Hamas (who espouse values and goals that are entirely hostile to leftist liberal values) because of a common opposition to the US and Israel.

Hatred of Bush, Cheney, Blair etc has blinded many leftist liberals to this glaring contradiction.
Leftists have an ideological opposition to the US and Israel but the ignore the fact that likes of Hezbollah and Hamas have genocidal intentions.

Leftist liberals in Palestine and through out the Middle East have been criminally sidelined.

If we really want to see change in the Middle East let us unite with leftist liberal individuals and organisations who share our values.

Support Abdul Karim Nabil!
