Dr. Ashley Deans, author and educator, is coming to Ireland as part of a Stress Free Schools campaign. Between March 13th and 22nd he will speak to Irish educators, parents, students and policy makers about Consciousness Based Education which broadens the conscious capacity of the human mind and removes stress from the lives of teachers and students..
"Most current educational approaches ignore the consciousness of the student", according to Dr. Deans. "Our information based approaches focus only on what is "known" — facts, procedures, concepts — but ignore the knower, the student's consciousness. This fragmented approach fails to awaken the student's total brain."
The result: students' inner genius and natural thirst for knowledge is stifled; pressures and stresses build up in their lives.
Education to Enliven the Total Brain
The solution lies not in new teaching methods or medications to sedate the brain, claims Dr. Deans. "I know, because at my school we use the Transcendental Meditation technique and Consciousness-Based Education to wake up the brain—to develop the brain's full potential."
Ashley Deans, PhD is the author of A Record of Excellence: The Remarkable Success of the Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment (M.U.M. Press; 161 pages). The director of this school in Iowa(USA) for the past 15 years, his book tells a remarkable story." "Our students are shining examples of creativity and intelligence. They have won over a hundred state, national, and international titles in the past decade.
According to David Lynch, world famous film producer, these students are "amazing, self-sufficient, wide-awake, energetic, blissful, creative, powerfully intelligent and peaceful human beings."
Using anectodal and scientific evidence Dr. Deans will demonstrate that students at ease within themselves respond more spontaneously and creatively to all educational environments. . He will also describe the reduction of alienation, tension, inattentiveness at school, and all kinds of self-destructive behaviour among young people involved in Consciousness Based education.
Dr. Deans will also argue that it is essential to raise the level of consciousness of all students in order that they begin to think and act naturally in ways that are in tune with their own deepest nature.
He maintains that this is especially relevant for Irish children. "They are growing up in a rapidly changing environment without clearly defined patterns to follow. Doubt and confusion can dominate even basic things. In the new Ireland, unlimited choice can be as overwhelming as no choice at all".
Students Can Reduce Incoherence in Society
Dr. Deans will draw attention to the necessity of decreasing incoherence in Irish society and the part students can play in this endeavour. "A society's problems wash up in its schools and colleges. Young people live in a world that is uncertain, sometimes meaningless, and occasionally repugnant. No matter how brilliant the services provided for them by their parents and the education system, their development will be retarded by the incoherence in society and the world at large."
"However, there is ample evidence that societal stress can be reduced by students through their group practice of Transcendental Meditation and the TM-Sidhi programme including Yogic Flying. Schools and Universities can become centres of peace and coherence for society."
Among the topics Dr. Deans will cover in his presentations
How to Develop the Total Brain Potential of the Student
The Hazards of Modern Education; Stress is Harming Students and Teachers
Consciousness Based Education in Maharishi School USA and in Schools Worldwide: Practical Results & Achievements
How to Erect School Buildings That De-Stress Students & Teachers
