The Arabic language Assyrian (also known as Chaldnen and Syriac) website ankawa.com is reporting that 1 priest and 3 deacons were gunned down in Mosul as they left the Church after having finished Sunday Mass.

It seems inevitable that the US will withdraw from Iraq - the Iraq war has been an unmitigated disaster.

But what then?

The Shia, Sunnis and Kurds will slaughter eachother in numbers we can now only imagine.

The chaos is sure to spread unless a multi-national force steps to keep the peace - otherwise Shia Iran might invade Iraq from the East and Sunni Saudi Arabia would move in from the South West.

An apocalytic war in the centre of Iraq where the two sectarian armies would meet?

Of course extremists dormant among the peaceful Muslim communities of Europe would stoke up trouble - Shia and Sunni sectarianism could turn the suburbs of many European cities into mini-Baghdad's.

Putin calls missile shields in Eastern Europe madness and threatens nuclear war might result.

Sadly we may need missile shields more than we dare admit.

'extremists dormant among the peaceful Muslim communities of Europe'?!

Shia and Sunni have been living in Europe and the rest of 'the west' for decades, even longer in some cases. All through the Lebanon war, the Palestinian conflict, and the first gulf war. Yet sectarian conflict has not spread to Europe, creating 'mini-Baghdads'.

The insinuation that muslims are all one crises away from exploding into sectarian warfare borders on the racist.

And how, exactly, would a missile shield help, pray tell?

"And how, exactly, would a missile shield help, pray tell?"

Iran is enriching uranium which can potentially be used in nuclear bombs. It already possesses delivery systems that can hit targets hundreds and thousands of miles away. It is obvious after remarks calling for Israel to wiped off the map that if Iran acquired more advanced missile technology and developed a nuclear arsenal that they would not hesitate to use it against its perceived enemies.

A missile shield would prevent them from hitting central Europe with a nuclear missile.

In relation to Muslim populations in Western Europe - surveys last year by Channel 4 have shown that a significant percentage of young male British Muslims sympathise with Osama Bin Laden and believe that the 7/7 bombings were justified and believe Britain should become an Islamic State with Sharia Law.

After bombings in Madrid and London, the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the extremist reaction to the Danish cartoons and the speech of Pope Benedict XVI, it is obvious that extremist elements in the Muslim communities in Europe are seeking to seize control of Muslim opinion and turn that extremism against Western democracy.

I must have missed the arrests? Were Islamic Fundamentalists arrested for this killing? No! He may just as well have been killed by criminals who are more prolific in Mosul than ectremist Islamic fighters. But why let that fact interfere with anti-islamic troll rants about anything from Van Gough to Armageddon.

Give it a rest lads and stop treating us as children.

As Sean Brady said, the situation in Irak has deteriorated immensely since the US and British invasion. He said that the dead priest had told him that before returning to Iraq that under Saddam Hussein Christians had enjoyed great freedom and protection. These are the words of the Chief Catholic in Ireland, not me, uttered on the news yesterday. So go and blame the US/UK for this killing and not Islamists, whom you have no proof did it.

In iraq under Sadam, Christians lived in peace. It is the US that has created the hell that is present day Iraq.

But that does not mean that we should ignore realities:
The parish where they served, the Church of the Holy Spirit, had been bombed and vandalized in the past, and Father Ganni had been threatened by Islamic militants, AsiaNews reports. The three deacons had been accompanying the priest constantly, hoping to protect him.

It does not appear to be the work of mere gangsters.

Islamic Fundamentalist Militias do exist in Iraq. They are not an invention of the CIA. They target Christians and women. They rarget other Muslims be they Shia or Sunni depending on the militia.
