'The time is up for Thatcher's children'- CPSU Rally Dublin 18th Feb

category national | worker & community struggles and protests | news report author Friday February 20, 2009 10:12author by Paula Geraghtyauthor email mspgeraghty at yahoo dot ieauthor phone 0876101340 Report this post to the editors

Thousands of CPSU members, who are on the lowest grades of pay and are mostly women, took part in a lunchtime protest outside the Dail on Wednesday in opposition to the Pension levy.

The Irish government want low paid workers to pay for the economic crisis by introducing a 'pension levy'. This means low paid workers in Clerical Officer grades will be forced to pay, against their will, an extra €40/50 minimum per week.
This is not a levy but a pay cut for the lower paid. Over three thousand civil service workers from all over the country, came out to protest at a lunchtime rally in Dublin outside the Dáil on Wednesday 18th February.

This attack is a Thatcherite move- break the strongest unions, ie the Public Sector and then go for the private sector.

This is a rough cut which provides a sense of what happened. Events are happening so fast it's a serious challenge to turn the edited work around.

The Fianna Fail/developer/banker/government caused this crisis. They cannot solve it. They must be got rid of. Let the protests coalesce into a general strike and demand that the government resign. Otherwise catastrophe is inevitable. (the Irish Green Party will live in infamy)

Why should the lower paid bail out the "Gamblers of the golden Circle"?.The national natural resources belong to the people of Ireland and should be used for their benefit.STOP this government gambling away our childrens future.Undo the GAS/OIL DEALS while we still can .IF we dont we will regret it for evermore.what is there to lose by trying?we should not be scared of driving the oil companies away.WE will still have our GAS/OIL for a future wiser generation.

The CPSU is strongly in favour of the Lisbon Treaty which is very much against workers rights. Why should we support them now? They will be out supporting Lisbon in the next referendum.

...Bazooka, especially at this critical time. Better to get involved in the campaign against Lisbon 2 and try educate and inform CPSU workers etc, and today would be a great time to start. Try telling them that Lisbon 2 is the same as Lisbon 1, it's just a recoding of the Gobbledeegook Gazette that is the 'treaty', with the aim of achieving the same results, which is the continued domination of capitalists over workers. Try and keep it as simple as possible.
Information such as: how can we trust faceless right wing bureaucrats/politicians in another country when we have no trust in our own gangster politicians who are in cahoots with gangster bankers/developers/speculaters? Information such as: workers rights will be almost eradicated or put back years if this 'treaty' gets through.
By encouraging 'us against them' you are doing what the government want, which is to divide and conquer, or in our case, reconquer. But I'm guessing you know all this already and are probably also an anti Lisbon campaigner, but let us be positive, optimistic, and above all, UNITED!

The old adage, 'An injury to one is an injury to all', will always be a truth.
