With her merciless slaying of the Freedom of Speech Act, Bridget Phillipson has shown herself to be a far more brutal political combatant than the enfeebled Tories. If you want to win the culture war, this is how to do it.

Easter Lilies Don't Belong in Stormont

Tuesday's launching of a campaign encouraging people to wear an Easter Lily by Conor Murphy in the Provos' Stormont offices is an insult to Ireland's dead whom they claim to honour, a spokesperson for Republican Sinn Féin has said.

“The Easter Lily (which the Provos have referred to as a 'Lilly' throughout) is the creation of the Cumann na mBan organisation, which always remained loyal to the ideals of true Republicanism.

“Ireland's patriot dead did not give their lives for the resurrection of Stormont. Indeed, those who will claim to honour them in Stormont tomorrow are the very same people who have recently described their actions as treason against Ireland.”

Their announcement of a drive to sell Easter Lilies comes on the same day that a councillor in Lurgan left the Provo party owing to their pro-British ideology.

Personally, I think they should go for cherryblossoms - mush better than lilys (or is it lilies?) Stormont probably needs a bit of redecoration, they should get in the 'designs for life' show from RTE or that other show on Channel 4, make Stormont fabulous!

Of course Easter Lilies don't belong in Stormont.

Nettles and thorn bushes and spiny Cacti would be much more suited.

Poison Ivy and and Deadly Nightshade as well maybe.

By "their actions" you mean the cowardly murder of a couple of unarmed men collecting a pizza.

"Their actions" are doing to republicanism,in all its guises, what the Brits never could do....that is, extinguish it.

(Quote) "By "their actions" you mean the cowardly murder of a couple of unarmed men collecting a pizza."

Regardless of what you think about the tragic loss of life, I'd hardly call walking up to a fortified British Army base "Cowardly". Plus, the guardtower by the gate where they were killed held an armed security officer (who was subsequently criticized by press and politicians for not returning fire and attempting to defend the soldiers). Subsequent statements have made mention that one of the gunmen gave covering fire towards the tower whilst the other fired into the soldiers.

On a related note, I think it's a bit weird that certain members of mainstream political parties (including those in government) were commemmorating and honouring the names of past Irish Republicans who had committed similar (perhaps even much worse?) acts.

Wasn't it Michael Collins who dragged a few of those British Agents out of their beds and "executed" them? Pretty nasty affair....and as I can remember, a few of them were not politiely asked to get dressed, load their service revolver and meet Micko and the boys at St Stephens Green for (what in the above posters terms) would have perhaps been a "fair shootout."
