IPSC leafleting of Leonard Cohen's gig - Please Don't Play in Israel!

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Monday July 20, 2009 14:52author by Kev (words) - TD (a/v) Report this post to the editors

As part of the international Cultural Boycott of Israel campaign, on the evening of Sunday 19th July, members and supporters of the IPSC gathered outside the O2 Arena in the Dublin Docklands and distributed leaflets to concert goers, asking Leonard Cohen not to carry on with his scheduled tour finale in Tel Aviv.

As I wasn't there myself, I can't really comment on what happened, though I hear the responses were generally positive. You can get some idea of the mood from the video and pics below.

(Thanks to TD for the pictures and the video)

The action also made it into the Irish Times, with two IPSC members and concert-goers being quoted. Read that online here: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2009/0720/1....html

Leafleting will continue tonight Monday 20th, Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd. If you'd like to come along and give us a hand, please let Martin know on 087 962 3624. For more info see the link below.

Assembly point: 6pm Daily, OPPOSITE JURY'S HOTEL ON THE QUAYS (northside, on the way to the 02).

That was a very nicely done protest. It is always much more effective to ask for peoples cooperation than to try and shout down at them with a megaphone. A favourite tactic of those who wish to discredit protestors is to portray them as aggressive thugs. Too often overzealous youth will play right into this stereotype and completely undermine their own campaign. This cannot be said of these people. There is a time and a place for action and in my experience the ones with the biggest mouths on protests are the first to be seen heading out the back door when that time arrives. Well done IPSC.
