SpunOut.ie competition In his forthcoming book - Hopes and Prospects, Noam Chomsky predicts hope for the future through grassroots activism as a mechanism for progressive change. “Activism is growing all over the world and ordinary people are realising that they can be agents for change”, he says. Chomsky is said to be one of the most politically influential living academics and is promoted by rock groups such as Rage Against the Machine and Pearl Jam at their concerts the way The Beatles once promoted the Guru Maharaji. In fact, these performers solemnly read excerpts from his work in between sets and urge their followers to read him too. |

A long time ago now in the pre-Borat and far pre-Brüno incarnations of the Cambridge educated commedian Sacha Baron Cohen career, Chomsky was set up to do an interview with a british yoof TV reporter named Ali G.
Amongst the questions Ali G asked Chomsky was the hilarious how many words does you know? and then the tough question of bilinguality. " is it fair to say he's bi? Ali G. wondered in shock at the sexual orientation aspersion cast on his relative.
Chomsky dealt with Ali G with the same patience and charm that he has long been seen to treat all questioners with. He admitted that he would love to be bilingual and master another language.
It was a telling revelation of humility.

Anyone who has studied linguistics will be aware of the shifts in Chomsky's theories over the years.
The man quite simply took on board criticism from peers and responded to the satisfaction of his peers.
Similarly those interested in linguistics will no doubt have pondered the one possible existing exception to his universal theory, the anomalous case of the still unverified assertions of Daniel Everett concerning the indiginous tribe of the Piraha in the Brazilian jungle.
Chomsky's integrity as an intellectual compliments well his qualities as teacher and his value as down to earth commoner garden man.
He's said it as he though it was. He changed and refined it. He never stopped thinking about it.
We've little reason to think he's got it wrong.
If there is one person to talk to humans about the human condition this forthcoming season in Ireland worth a spin on a lottery of chance, then, given the choice of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Noam Chomsky - you'd be better off writing your postcards or emails with a brief idea of how Ireland can be changed for the Chomsky gig.
It doesn't matter how many languages he speaks. Those who do speak many languages love him.
jayzhus I read the man's tarot cards. call me a fraud or blasphemer why don't yiz?

considering the BVM might not appear on December 8th - how would you suggest changing Ireland for the better?

Ali G talks to the main man Noam Chomsky
It's interesting that so many people hang on every word Noam Chomsky has to say about the international issues of the day; but few bother to read and understand what he has to say about learning languages. How good are his ideas on language?
not sure...I guess email info@spunout.ie or maybe they'll post it in their next update. I presume they've let the winners know.
when do we find out who won the tickets?
