I totally agree with you.
Listening to Harney and Coughlan on the radio yesterday while standing in O'Connell street I was so angry to hear the pair speak of sharing the Pain.
What is going on here. The Irish people should be standing together against the totally undemoccratic actions of the elite against the working class
"Minister for Health, Mary Harney, has said marching will not reduce the economic challenges facing the country. She also said people have the right to protest in a democracy, but said the Government has to take the decisions that it deems necessary to deal with the economic crisis. "
Translation: March all you want you idiots, but we'll still push through the policies we and our elite friends want.
"She said the Government faces unprecedented economic challenges and that everyone needs to work together in the national interest."
Translation: We're cutting welfare and services to pay for this and we refuse to fairly tax the rich. Get used to it fools.
Why is this woman even still in office??. The PD's no longer exist. Her sole remit seems to be to dismantle our health services and run them into the ground so that large corporations can come in and cherry pick the profitable parts of it, creating a basket case system like in the US. They don't even bother to follow up on the millions some of these private health insurance companies still owe to the public health system for use of it's facilities, meanwhile old people wait on trollies for hours in A&E
Following this mornings radio - again I noticed the bells ringing from Government Buildings. I say March all you want. The cuts must come also.
Why can NAMA protect the few hundred elite who created the property bubble via 'Bertie and his cohorts' and the Tent, and be protected?
Joe Bloggs right across this country must make a stand and be united now.
They are trying to split the unions. You need to fuel your knowledge and add a little anger and passion to make a stand for the people of Ireland who pay the taxes and are citizens of the country.
Now is the time for a unity of minds - Yes, the workers!
Liam Harnett
It appears to me now that Government sources want a split in the Trade Unions - SIPTU, IBEC, IMPACT, ITGWU etc. It would suit to rely on the old 'Divide and Conquer' theory.
I hope you have learned that this is not our mess.
Ahern's illusion Tiger of 10 years and Bertie is 'scott free'
March, Stand Up now, and Face the Government down.
L Harnett
The march today will see the handing in of a letter to Lenihan at Government Buildings.
Nurses, fire officers, prison staff, gardai members who work 24 by 7 - all of us now must stand together and especially the teachers of all unions must ensure they don't get divided by Harney, Gormley and Coughlan.
Together we stand and Morally we will win.
Valentino
The march yesterday went well.
I thought that Lenihan, if at all possible, should have sent a Minister of State out to receive the 'Letter of Protest" from the 24/7 all weather services representatives.
Terry Leyden (Senator) took the letter - well that alone speaks dividends.
I totally agree with you Liam - NO DIVISIONS. STAY UNITED ON ALL FRONTS AND STAND THIS GOVERNMENT DOWN.
John P Graham
These are not “the people” as such. They are a sectional interest of public sector trade unions that have muscle because of the sensitive nature of the particular jobs they do. They get well rewarded for the unsocial hours they must work. Preserving their remuneration from any wider pay cuts can only be done at the expense of the actual people – that is the great majority who are not part of the 24/7 alliance whether public or private, working or not.
These people perform vital services which keep our state going. Many are on very average wages, unlike the inflated pay packets of senior management and TD's. If anyone deserves their wage for doing REAL IMPORTANT WORK (and not just being overpaid for talking shite and paper pushing), it is these people.
I support their actions as an unemployed person who previously worked in the private sector and is not in their union.
Again, I say keep together all Unions especially the Teachers.
Listening to John Gormley at RTE 1 lunchtime news today, he is following the Harney, Coughlan line.
Parents don't want this strike. Divide between IBEC Public Sector Governments Agenda all week on the radio, TV
Divide. Stand Firm - let Harney and Hubby Geoghegan pay back the taxepayers all their expenses.
This would be moral. Then again it would be wishful thinking!
Liam - Keep this stand - NO DIVISION, OTHERWISE, this FF/Green Government will try and sway peoples' anger at the public sector.
Today on Marianne Finucane RTE 1 Programme, one panel member (can't remember the name) but they said nurses get an annual euros 350 allowance for uniform cleaning. Are these RTE specially selected experts seriously on the planet.
No mention of Harney, Couglan's, Gormley, Roddy Molloy, Bull O'Donoghue and the rest - their EXPENSES that went into millions.
No teacher on this Island wants to strike but where is the Choice.
People must march together.
Liveline today.
The people of the Nation will hold the Teachers with contempt next week.
Wrong.
RTE 1 and selective calls.
Unions are acting out of sheer desperation with no choice but to tell this Government Enough is Enough.
Frank Connolly's article is worth reading in this months Village magazine. We need a Wake Up call for this Government.
NAMA protects the Elite who made this mess. Property, Greed, Bertie's Tent, Deals.
Teachers did nothing and now they must take more cuts.
Not Good Enough
Not good enuf is right!
This country is awash with corruption, pension pay offs, no accountabilitgy and to hear teachers will be held in contempt, I cry in disbelief.
Teachers work hard. They bring homework home daily and are decent with their time down the years.
We need a major change of morals in this country.
Not Good Enuf - well said Liam.
March United next week
and No Divide
Damion
It is a digrace to hear that Doherty, AIB new CEO, has been humbled to accept a salary of only My God half of one million euros! annually.
Lenihan promised Two Principles
- cap on salary
- outsider to run AIB
Non Starter?
Now for the ordinary tax payers who own this bank - teachers, nurses, Gardai, Prison Staff, civil servants .... all,
They must march in the rain, to keep their salary above the breadline
Liam Fleming
Most gardai and prison officers get well over twice the industrial wage + excellent pensions and retirement arrangements + other benefits. One suspects this is about preservation of privilege rather than anything to do with the breadline.
Skeptic
Yes I read the Examiner.
Look at the gross pay then add on the levies and you say PRIVILEGED. Sorry. Don't Agree.
How about this? Let's Go. Morals:
Bankers who broke this economy wont work economy for less than half million euros yearly. What do you call this?
Exactly. PRIVILEGED BULL.
MARCH. Don't split is message to all Unions.
This is a crucial time for all public and private sectors especially the low paid.
MARCH
Liam Fleming.
The finances are so bad the government will just deduct the pay of the strikers for the day.
And carry on.........regardless.
The time is now close for the public sector to make it clear for these bunch of clowns in Dail Eireann.
No. Enough is Enough.
Levies. Cut backs
Teachers are the nucleus of our society.
People may slag off.
There comes a time when ordinary people who really run this country must take it back on Principles.
This Government need a serious wake up call.
Come on the protest.
Principles. Never Lose them
Liam Harnett
Some media broadsheets may try and warrant an excuse to attack pickets and public servants in all sectors today. A good turnout!!
I note you say march i.e. we the people, until you drop. Well last year the Pensioners put these clowns in their place over medical cards. People must stand together.
This country is literally awash with floods and corruption.
Time for Change??
Trade Unions stand firm. The Berlin Wall came down. Nothing is impossible.
It appears to me Liam that the Divide is happening quickly.
According to RTE or the Spin machine reports last night and this morning
- that while thousands were on the pickets; thousands of public workers went shopping in Newry.
Another private sector worker on radio said P.P.P. (PRIVILIGED, PENSIONS PUBLIC WORKERS) have not lost one job, while the private sector have lost 200,000 in one year.
Sadly Liam the Divide is Happening
Emer Butterly
The people March and have marched and intend to march again!
Yet the news reports a divide between the SWP and the Socialists
SIPTU and IBEC
Community Employments Groups and the next tier up (interesting panel of TV3 Vincent Browne Show last night)
What happened to the Unified front?
Meantime Anglo Irish Bank executive or so the news states today was party to loans from Anglo Irish amounting to 8 m. He is named as Mr. Drumm and not alone is he responsible for taking the loans of 8 million euros but he had the common sense! to transfer them to his wife's name. How many more loans to executives will follow his pattern. Is this the real reason for the decision to nationalise Anglo Irish!!!
Now where does the Law stand! In the US Madoff is already sentenced to prison for in excess of 30 years.
If the plain people of Ireland continue to fragment at the pace of the present scale and as the worst ever weather destroys sectors in our communities, we will be the losers. We need to form a Flank of strong will to bolster the rights of the ordinary working people of Ireland. We have an opinion surely regarding the Budget in December!
News today is that the loans from the European Central Bank are 98 bn euros. They are said to be reviewing the interest rates. They stand firm until the New Year but then there is a decision to be made. The people need to make themselves aware and use all avenues of negotiation to secure the best deal for our indebtedness.
We the people need to acknowledge that our public bodies may need to be restructured and that mergers may be required but core to this is the input of the people at grass roots levels. If we achieve this, these people too can become part of the innovative spirit of the Island of Ireland.
I am teaching for 12 years now and am still not full time.
These cuts hurt, all over this country.
I will march until I drop and believe me teachers and the civil servants or the lower scale, are suffering.
The Mercs drive around Dublin, into Kildare Street, so detached are they from reality.
People are struggling to make ends meet for their families especially the private sector.
I hope to God there is no Divide between IBEC and SIPTU.
March Together is the right message on this topic.
The Government would love a Divide.
The talks are ongoing. I heard on the radio over the weekend J. O'Connor Siptu arguing with a lady heading up Small Business Firms.
She told O'Connor they were a separate group independent of IBEC. The row was petty but it shows the Divide is beginning between the public and private sector.
However the march next week will depend on question :
Do we March United or Divided?
L. Fleming
