Elaine Boyle, socialist, feminist, revolutionary, writer, and poet from Drimnagh, sadly and suddenly passed away last week.

Sadly mourning the passing away of London born Drimnagh woman, Elaine Boyle, (1959 – 2010). Elaine passed away on Tuesday 4th May in the Matter Hospital, Dublin. On Sat May 1st, 2010, Elaine joined the workers march in Dublin. She was arrested by police, and later brought to the Matter Hospital in an ambulance. When the ambulance arrived at the hospital, she escaped and ran off. However, later that night, she was found at the foot of a wall, severly injured. When she arrived at the hospital, she was declared brain-dead. Her loving daughter Nora Boyle was at her side on Tuesday when her heart stopped beating.

Elaine was a compassionate and strong woman, a fierce advocate for social change. She became a vegetarian at the age of 14. She was a pioneer single mother in the late seventies, when she had Nora alone, aged 17, fighting to keep her daughter and mother her according to her principles and beliefs. She was an ardent anti-war campaigner, with strong sympathy for the palestinian people, on whose behalf she worked tirelessly. She was an ardent feminist, socialist, anti-racist and poet, a woman of many talents. She was a member of the Irish Communist Party (Páirtí Cumannach na hÉireann). She was a victim of mistreatment by Mental Health Services for 30 years, misdiagnosed, used to test medication, and deliberately hooked on medication, discrinated against and disabled.

She is currently laid out in Flanagans Funeral Parlour, Angier St. (next door to the bones of St. Valentine!), in an organic willow basket. The willow is from Donegal. She will remain there until Monday morning (10th May). There will be a procession at 11 am to the Unitarian Church, St. Stephens Green, where a service will be held at 11:30 am. All are welcome, green or red flags or left flags are requested. her flag the Starry Plough, will be draped over her coffin.

Why do people have to sensationalise things?

The Guards and the Health Services, on this particular night did nothing wrong?

Please check your facts before posting onto a public forum - such as the web. . . .

OK they may have failed her miserably, all her life, but there's no question of she being dragged to Pearse St and then taken to hospital - South Africa Style. . .

Don't jump from the phone / idle chat to publc media so wrecklessly - this has cost life in the past . . .

Dear Friends,
Yesterday Elaine Boyle was given a big send off. As was her wish a humanist ceremony was held in the Uniterian Church in Stephens Green. The church seats around 400 people and many people were forced to stand outside. Her Funeral cortege was led by a young kid appropiately named Fionn who symbolically carried a wooden sword, he was accompanied by his sister Rowan. A large number of flags were carried behind the cortege including The Irish Starry Plough and Palestinian and Cuban flags to represent some of the things that she was interested and involved in. A fine poem that was written in Elaine's honour was recited by Robert McElroy the Tara Campaigner, and her Brother Michael spoke movingly about his sister. It was a great show of respect for Elaine and it was what she richly deserved.

The Service yesterday was a fitting tribute to Elaine. On the cortege were Palestinian and Cuban flags.

Elaine was not arrested, she entered Pearse St. Garda of her own volition on saturday evening, barefoot.

I recieved the information by phone and made an assumption based on the fact that she was taken from the police station in an ambulance.
I assumed that there was a polical arrest involved.

The importance of international solidarity is greater now than ever, as governments fall over themselves to wring every possible penny from the pocket of the working man, for the enrichment of the very worst people in our society. It is difficult to believe that courage is still a requirement for those wishing to march through Dublin city - that they should be at risk from the police in Ireland in 2010 is an outrage.

My heart breaks for the family of poor Elaine Boyle, a strong and committed woman whose passionate concern for the rights of others led her to be arrested, thereby setting in motion a chain of events leading to her tragic death. No doubt the gardai will investigate themselves thoroughly and conclude that none of their members was in any way at fault.

A sad end to a proud and united workers' march for rights.

Elaine was a wonderful person - always full of energy and purpose.

She died while campaigning against injustice and corporate greed. In other words, she died as she lived.

The world has lost a little of its colour today.
