The Pipe Wins Major Award For Best Documentary at Galway Film Fleadh

category dublin | arts and media | news report author Tuesday July 13, 2010 23:32author by Michael Gallagher - Photographerauthor email libertypics at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

A documentary film four years in the making, The Pipe tells the story of the people of Rossport in the West of Ireland and the efforts of the Shell oil company to lay a pipeline through their community. The discovery of gas off this remote coastal village has led to the most dramatic clash of cultures in modern Ireland.
Nigel O'Regan (editor); Rachel Lysaght (producer) and Risteard Ó Domhnaill (directot and producer)

The rights of farmers over their fields, and of fishermen to their fishing grounds, have come into direct conflict with one of the world’s most powerful oil companies. Whenthe citizens look to their State to protect their rights, they find that the government has put Shell’s right to lay a pipeline over their own. Risteard Ó Domhnaill’s compelling documentary follows three very different characters as the local community is plunged into turmoil, not only by their opposition to the project, but more tragically, by the struggles within their own campaign. ThePipe tells the story of a pipeline that can bring economic prosperity or destroy a way of life shared for generations.

Where can the film be seen in Dublin or where can it be bought?

It's early days yet, but there is some interest from other festivals etc and distributers have to be found. But I'm sure it won't be long before it's on general release.

Just checked the website.Pat is to be released on saturday. Hope he is not going to be replaced by Eoin Lawless, who had a damp meeting with one or two of our guardians of the corporate peace last night.Seems the abuse is to continue till morale improves.Business as usual.

Thanks for the report and photos, but the central element of the story - i.e. the thing that is flagged in the headline - is missing from the story, namely what award the film won. I love Indymedia and I love that it is not mainstream media, but there are some basic conventions of mainstream media that Indymedia contributors would benefit from observing. One of them would be: if your headline says something, there should be something about that in the story.

I saw the film in Galway and enjoyed it. I didn't understand why it left out the sinking of Pat's boat though, or why it chose to ignore the assault on Willy Corduff. It also ends with a text card saying that on the back of a planning board decision that went against them Shell are "reconsidering their options". Hardly, seems to everyone that its full steam ahead for Shell.
