Reflection on death of Live Hare Coursing club former CEO

category national | miscellaneous | other press author Saturday November 06, 2010 20:42author by Protecting Ireland's Wildlife Report this post to the editors

Departure from this death of Jerry Desmond, former CEO of the Irish Coursing Club

As a lifelong campaigner against hare coursing, I have mixed feelings about the death in a swimming-related incident in Portugal on Friday of Jerry Desmond, former CEO of the Irish Coursing Club.

For 20 years, Mr. Desmond worked hard to promote the horrific cruelty of live hare coursing in Ireland. Naturally he didn't think of it as cruelty. Like most fans of the practise, he was in denial of its true nature.

In recent years he fell foul of his former pals in the ICC. He was "lifted" by the Fraud Squad earlier this year and questioned about alleged fraud involving the ICC and its official organ, the Sporting Press. He was released without charge and a file sent to the DPP. The DPP has not yet made a decision in relation to whether or not to have anyone charged in relation to the alleged fraud.

Mr. Desmond was also central to litigation involving the ICC and a property developer, Limerick-based Greenband Investments. Greenband sued the ICC for alleged breach of contract over the sale of a right of way adjacent to ICC HQ in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

Greenband won the case and the Commercial Court will decide on January 18th 2011 on the amount of damages to be awarded againt the hare coursing organisation. Hare baiting fans nationwide fear the case will sink coursing.

Though an enemy of hare coursing, I hope Mr. Desmond died a less painful death than the thousands of hares that his orgainsation had ripped to pieces by dogs throughout his tenure as ICC CEO.

May he find peace in the Spirit World and become an animal lover in his next life on earth.

I doubt if there is a Heaven or Hell but if there is and if there is any justice then I hope this guy is being ripped to pieces by hell hounds. Oh and being poked with red hot pokers as well.

As a niece of Jerry I kindly ask that you stop writing of him so badly. Anything to lessen the pain of his family.

i wish there was a hell for him to rot in. i have the same amount of sympathy for Jerry Desmond's death that he had for hares.

I'm not sorry he's dead.
How much pain and suffering has he been responsible for?
I hope he rots in hell.

"but I have no doubt but that JD will, as we all must, deal with his earth life performance. "

If only this were true. But I sincerely doubt it.
Sadly bad people do bad things in this life and profit handsomely from it without ever having to account for the evil they support.
Look at the smithfield food company, it's huge cruel factory farms and it's fat CEO's. I wish they WOULD get judged in the next life because clearly they certainly won't in this life

I certainly was not vindictive. I believe in life after death on the basis of the evidence I've seen, and I believe we all must come to terms with our actions in our earth lives. I note that throwaway remark about Watership Down etc. This isn't the place to begin a debate on this weighty subject of the afterlife, but I have no doubt but that JD will, as we all must, deal with his earth life performance. Right now, he is in the Spirit World. Before knocking what I say, do a bit of research, keep an open mind, and you'll be surprised by the amount of evidence you find to support the reality of life after death.

Those of us who help alleviate animal suffering right now may, in some cases, may have been cruel to animals in past earth lives. We all undergo death, and after our bodies die and are discarded, we continue to exist, as proven by the many contacts from the Spirit World. Laugh if you wish to remain ignorant and keep your mind closed, but I suggest you thoroughly research the subject, including the experiments conducted by SPR and with mediums etc.

Anti-speciest. Despite what you write , I get the impression that you would like to see all hare coursers die a horrible death. The same goes for the person that started this sick thread who says he/she has "mixed feelings" about the death of Jerry Desmond . The thread was started within a day of Desmond's death and is vindictive : it isn't reflective at all .

I too hope he suffered as little as possible in his death- but am glad that the scum-bag is dead. Anyone who causes more suffering than they alleviate has no reason to live. Though it's not nice to have to wish death on anyone, I hope all hunters, hare coursers, and all other animal exploiters perish as soon and swiftly as possible, and invite anyone to share that feeling without any guilt. I understand why one's feeling might be "mixed" about such a death, but totally encourage celebration over sympathy!
