Reform is favourite to win the Runcorn and Helsby by-election, overturning Labour's 14,700 majority. Why? It might have something to do with having the nation's third-highest number of asylum seekers, says Steven Tucker.

A Notice for the Top of the Hill...and Back Down Again

category national | anti-capitalism | opinion/analysis author Monday November 15, 2010 13:04author by Michael Gallagher - Photographerauthor email libertypics at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

Below is the text in a notice that is being sent to all members of SIPTU. I had just a quick glance and it reads like a sticking plaster. It is well worth debating.

TO: ALL MEMBERS

RE: March for “A Better, Fairer Way” – Saturday 27th November, 11.30 a.m. Wood Quay, Dublin

The country is in the throes of the most serious economic crisis in our history. This is because the Government allowed speculators, bankers and developers run riot. They then included useless institutions in a State Credit Guarantee Scheme, mortgaging all our futures.

Their solution is to promise the most savage budget ever. This is consistent with the course they have followed since the collapse over two years ago. It is completely unfair and it has not worked. Indeed, it is actually making matters worse. We need a fair and credible plan for investment and growth. This is necessary to get our people back to work and to rebuild our economy. It is also what is required to convince the Bond Markets to lend the money needed to run the country. Middle and Lower Income families cannot be expected to endure misery whilst those who caused the problem go on living pretty much as they always have.

We must not stand idly by. ICTU has called a March and Rally in support of the demand for a better, fairer way, on Saturday 27th November in Dublin. There are more ways of influencing budgetary policy than waiting until whenever the Government sees fit to call a General Election. It may be too late by then. A big turnout would force them to re-think their quick fix strategy which clearly is not working. They would have to provide for massive investment from the National Pension Reserve Fund. This would create thousands of jobs. Moreover, they would also have to impose a fair share of the burden on the wealthiest people in our society thus alleviating the impact on working people and those dependent upon public services.

All members are urged to participate.

It is good to see the people of Ireland waking up to the fact we are f**ked. We have been shafted up the a**se for over 10 years. our money wasted and political leaders and oppositin parties all working the system. No body at any level took any real action and those who tried found that the system is designed to block any action. There is an action that "joe soap" can take and that is use the vote properly. Unfortunately the majority of this nation voted back into power the people that have wrecked it. there were all sorts of warnings over the years about these guys, but everyone was to busy enjoying the cash flowing around to notice or even bother to look. Nice was overthrown and Lisbon was overthrown by the same apathy and the people believed all the parties lies, JOBS RECOVERY. Then also Fianna Fail were voted back in over and over again. I agree with the angry sentiment and I agree there should be more action taken at all levels, including public show of strenght and peaceful demonstrations. What I total disagree with is, anyone who has voted for this shower and then voted for the lies in Lisbon and Nice and ignored what these traitors were doing. I dont believe they have anything to protest about...Before anyone starts complaining and protesting ask yourself one question, Are you to blame?

Anraoi you are correct in what you say above. The voters who elected the current gombeens are about to elect the other shower of twedeldee gombeens instead. I see no evidence to show that the irish are escaping from their slave minds. RTE and the media have played a big part in this, and years of partnership with their betters in ibec etc also had a role in messing up their thinking. We will all suffer big time now for these political and economic traitors who voted yes yes to the Nice and Lisbon referenda. They are squealing a bit now because they might have to raise their beloved Corporation tax a couple of percent but soon they be fully fledged slaves in most senses and not just their minds which has long been the case.
