Speaking during a Sinn Féin canvass in Dublin city centre today Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams yesterday urged voters to reject the Lisbon Treaty '”in order to build a Fairer Ireland and a Better Europe”. Membersof the party distributed leaflets in Dublin city centre asking people to reflect on why they were being asked to vote again. Responses varied, with most people saying they were going to vote the same way they did last year. However a worrying number of people were confused by the government's campaign on the treaty, and were unclear on the status of the so-called guarantees. read full story / add a comment

In what could have seemed like a typical storm in a tea-cup about a fortnight ago & in my opinion didn't merit comment or reporting then, a village consultation in Catalonia has evinced EU parliament cross party condemnation of the Spanish state. The leaders of the EU conservatives, socialists, greens and liberals have expressed their concern at the continued operation of the Spanish Falange party. Manfred Weber leads the conservative block in the EU parliament he has said "this demonstration celebrates a brutal and inhuman totalitarian system in which thousands of European died and it must be stopped" or Bernhard Rapkay leader of the German socialists in the EU "we must punish any European who uses fascist symbols". What could have caused that? The story really is extraordinarily interesting, ironic, though provoking & of interest to Welsh, Scot or any referendum voter. read full story / add a comment

Sinn Féin and Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin in Lucan and Clondalkin held a day of action against the re-run of the Lisbon Treaty. Pickets were held at the constituency offices of Green party TD Paul Gogarty and Fianna Fail TD John Curran. Two large banners were erected on both offices by Ógra activists, which invited large support from passers by. read full story / add a comment

Referendums modify Irish foundational law and are, in effect, a court and citizens are the jury This requires, in the interest of fair conduct, criteria such as the following are complied with as in the courts. There must be careful, truthful, balanced and clear exposition of the various aspects of the amendment no preconditioning or intimidation of citizen jurors adequate opportunity and time for all concerned citizens to evaluate the issues adequate opportunities for citizen jurors to evaluate the credibility proponents of Yes & No cases etc read full story / add a comment

On the 21st of March, 1953 a cartoon appeared inthe "New Yorker" by the Scottish cartoonist Ale Graham which showed one UFO, one horse in a field, two extra-terrestials with the caption take me to your leader . The rest is history. In the list of possibly apocryphal quotations of Henry Kissenger (history has been rewritten since he started out) is included the question who do I call for Europe It is quite mind numbingly appalling for me as an Irish migrant to Europe to read not bit of coverage of the Isbon Treaty which doesn't not include comment on who are the candidates to take the Big Job of Permanent President of the European Council read full story / add a comment

A little thought would enable most to see that ending competition (war or commercial warfare in which the strongest, wealthiest, most devious etc generally win) is the imperative if we want a just & peaceful world. Those of us who blame “the system"- capitalism, communism, socialism or religions of any persuasion have been misled. The system is what those in power make it regardless of what it's called. Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, or their ilk control, dominate, terrorise, kill,even their own as well as the enemy to achieve their ends. Gandhi, MLKing or Christ would never use such methods because they loved humanity even their "enemies" read full story / add a comment

According to the Swedish "Dagens Nyheter" newspaper's updates in the last two hours, the US military entered a hospital run by the Swedish Committe for Afghanistan this week in pursuit of a patient who according to them held valuable intelligence on the Taliban. This would constitute a breach of the Geneva Conventions. This newsbreak follows coverage of the strongest statements critical of the NATO strategy so far by the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt at the meeting of EU foreign ministers held yesterday. Anyone who prizes Irish neutrality or perhaps those who sneer at such a thing, ought know that Sweden is a neutral state. It is unique amongst the neutral states of Europe in that it boasts a highly developed arms industry which indeed is also one of the oldest happily supplying military hardward to all and sundry since before Napoleon. The Swedish share the northern "Provincial Reconstruction Team" with the Finnish under German command. read full story / add a comment

He is coming to Ireland at the invitation of Republican Sinn Féin from September 21 to 23. On September 21 he will address a press conference in Buswell’s Hotel, Molesworth St, Dublin at 12 Noon. That evening he will be the keynote speaker at a public meeting in Wynn’s Hotel, Middle Abbey St at 7.30pm. The next day he will travel to Galway where he will address a meeting in the Imperial Hotel, Eyre Square at 8.00pm. There are plenty of good reasons to vote No, again, on Lisbon – far more than there are reasons to vote Yes. We shouldn’t be ashamed of saying that the best of them are only partly to do with the specificities of the treaty itself. On the other hand, we should be careful about some of the debating points we adopt. Anti-imperialists, peace campaigners and workers’ rights advocates on the No side have the best set of arguments, to be sure. The writings of Kieran Allen and Andy Storey, among others, are the gold standard and I wouldn’t presume to add to them. But a few folks on ‘our side’ – and with that phrase I don’t include the right-wingers who happen to support the same vote but are otherwise alien politically – are wandering down some political dark alleys. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 29th August, the indefatigable activist Tommy Donnellan of IFPAL (Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon) was arrested on the street in Galway while engaged in legitimate advocacy for the Palestinian cause, and against the Lisbon Treaty that will set in formaldehyde the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy that is so detrimental to that cause read full story / add a comment

The pro-Lisbon political parties do not need to raise funds for the 'Yes' to Lisbon campaign. Big business is directly funding their side of the debate. The announcement that Intel and Ryanair will spend hundreds of thousands of euro to try to achieve a Yes vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty represents an unconcealed attempt by big business to shape politics in its favour. Ryanair alone says it plans on spending over half a million Euro advertising for a pro-Lisbon vote, together with Intel that means up to a million Euro for a 'Yes' by only two private corporations. read full story / add a comment |
