Time for Starmer to be honest about what Net Zero means, says Chris Morrison. Rationing, blackouts and travel restrictions in five years. That's according to a Government-funded report that, for a change, says it plain.

Meet the woman so afraid of climate change she made her husband get the snip and refuses to have children. It's "selfish" to bring children into the world "when we don't know if it's going to exist in 100 years".

GAAW Bulletin August 2013

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | opinion/analysis author Friday August 16, 2013 20:43author by Galway Alliance Against War Report this post to the editors

The August GAAW Bulletin will be a rather truncated edition as we bring to your attention forthcoming activities by Galway’s local peace group.

The U.S. military hub at Shannon airport remains our principal focus. It is through here that Washington ferries its soldiers and its weaponry to kill innocent people in far off lands. This makes us direct accomplices to mass murder.

DRONE CAMPAIGN
We hope to make Galwegians aware of the brutality of it all with an information campaign on the impact of US killer drones. In early autumn we intend to run a poster campaign combined with the screening of a number of short films on drones, including Omer Fast’s “5,000 feet is best” that deals with the actual life of a drone operator.

“FAST” IN SOLIDARITY WITH GUANTANAMO
HUNGER STRIKERS
Another aspect of GAAW’s work will be focussing on the on-going Guantanamo hunger strike and the inhuman force-feeding of the hunger strikers. GAAW is hoping to link up with peace activists throughout the country to hold a fast in solidarity with the Guantanamo hunger strikers. Where better to hold such an event, than at Shannon warport? CIA torturers/kidnappers travelled through Shannon en route to “rendition” numerous hostages. There is indeed strong evidence that some hostages were even brought through this airport on their way to the Guantanamo concentration camp.

No date has been fixed for this fast, but we expect it will be at the beginning of September.

Dánta as Guantanamo

The date for one event dealing with Guantanamo has been set. On the 3rd October Gabriel Rosenstock will read from his Irish translations of poems by Guantanamo prisoners in Áras na nGael, Dominick St, Galway at 8pm. We will remind you of this event again closer to the date.

“FREE BRADLEY MANNING”
Next week, however, we will mark the sentencing of one of Washington’s many prisoners, Bradley Manning. This young whistleblower has committed no crime. Rather he did humanity a service by bringing to light war crimes. Nevertheless, he faces life imprisonment in a living hell imposed by the Washington establishment and its hypocrite par excellence President Obama. GAAW will hold a simple protest as part of a worldwide campaign calling for Bradley Manning’s release. Our event will take place on Shop St Galway next Wednesday, 21st August, from 12pm until 2pm. We will meet at Lynch’s Castle. Please join us if and when you are free. We would ask you to bring along a placard spelling out your solidarity with this brave young man.

ENNIS COURT APPEARANCE FOR GAAW MEMBERS

Two members of GAAW will be in front of Ennis Court on September 11th at 10.30am in relation to their involvement in an international protest to highlight the criminal use of killer drones by the USA. Margaretta D’Arcy and Niall Farrell were arrested on October 7th 2012 for occupying the runway at Shannon warport. They face the absurd charge that they “did interfere with the proper use of that airport”. Both our colleagues will argue that they interfered with the improper use of that civilian airport.
At the hearing at Ennis Court on July 11th there was a good turnout of supporters, let’s ensure there will be again on September 11th – the 40th anniversary of the CIA coup in Chile, which brought the monster Pinochet to power.
