Trump the Philosopher Sun Jun 29, 2025 07:00 | James Alexander Trump is great because he calls a spade a spade, which is unheard of in Western politics, says Prof James Alexander. What's more, sometimes, as we saw with Iran, he refuses, like the philosopher, to take sides.

Sat, 21 Oct 2023, 13:00 Assemble 1pm at Garden of Remembrance, Dublin 1
NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION FOR PALESTINE: STOP GAZA GENOCIDE!
At the time of writing, Apartheid Israel has cut off all aid, water and power to over million people trapped in the Gaza Strip. It has engaged in widespread and indiscriminate bombing, killing almost 3,500 people, one third of them children. Civilian infrastructure has been decimated; homes, offices, hospitals, schools and universities have all been targeted, as have medics and journalists. One million people have been displaced. The health system is on the brink of collapse.
 And now an Israeli ground invasion is imminent.
We in the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign do not use this word lightly – but we concur with experts that there is the very real possibility of a genocide taking place if the world does not act to stop it.
This is a truly horrifying prospect, and in 2023 should be simply unacceptable.
Join us to demand that the Irish government acts now, with the utmost urgency. Palestinian lives depend on it.
The Irish government must urgently use its voice and influence, especially at the EU level, to call for:
• An immediate ceasefire, including an end to all Israeli bombing and the illegal displacement of civilians;
• An ending of the illegal Siege of Gaza, including urgently allowing humanitarian aid in, and the immediate restoration of water and power by Israel;
• Action by the UN for the protection for Palestinians in Gaza;
• Recognising that Israel’s system of Apartheid enforced upon the Palestinian people underpins all violence in the region, and that an end to violence requires an end to this regime of Apartheid. This is the only way to address the root of the crisis.
Furthermore, there are concrete actions that the Irish government can take unilaterally, right now:
• Implement the Occupied Territories Bill, which has been blocked since 2020;
• Implement the Illegal Israeli Settlements Divestment Bill;
• Listen to Palestinian civil society, major human rights organisations, and UN Special Rapporteurs and publicly recognise that Israel is committing the Crime of Apartheid against the Palestinian people.
Ireland, and the international community, must act now.
At a time when the international community should be mobilising to prevent another Nakba, failure to do so is to abandon Palestinians and would be simply unconscionable.
Please bring friends, family, Palestinian flags, banners, noise. While party banners are welcome, would ask that you do not bring party-political flags (Irish, Palestinian or others).
