ESF meeting on the crisis in capitalism, Galway, Thursday
galway |
public consultation / irish social forum |
press release
Tuesday September 30, 2003 01:15 by Orla Ni Chomhrai

A European Social Forum Public meeting is to be held this Thursday (2/10) at 8pm in the Atlanta Hotel, Dominick Street, Galway. Speakers include Gerritt Nelson Stevenson, a Nigerian anti-capitalist activist; John Carty, MANDATE trade union divisional organiser; Kieran Cunnane, Defend Free Speech, Assembly and Activty (DFSAA); Rory Hearn, Globalise Resistance, Ireland. After the collapse of the World Trade Organisation meeting in Mexico, and with the growth of social movements around the world challenging the system we live under and looking for alternatives many groups, organisations and individuals will be assembling at the second EUROPEAN SOCIAL FORUM (ESF), to be held in Paris in November. The ESF is an open meeting place for reflective thinking, democratic debate and free exchange of ideas.
Last year 60,000 activists including people from Galway gathered at the first ESF in Florence. It is hoped to send a delegation from Galway this year to join in the Irish mobilisation.
Find out more about the social forum movement that unites people from the developed and developing world, and brings together NGOs, trade unionists, anti-capitalists, community activists, environmentalists and concerned citizens amongst others on local, national and international levels to debate and organise against global injustices and provide alternatives and solutions.

- since November last year the Irish Social Forum has been building slowly and steadily
- the ISF has 5 regional forums, has had 3 all-island gatherings, has adopted the World Social Forum Charter of Principles
- the regional Social Forums on the island now are: Dublin (ISF Summit + Carnival Working Group meeting every week; NorthEast (meeting every 2 weeks); NorthWest (meeting infrequently); Cork (meeting every month); and, SouthEast (meeting infrequently).
- the first Irish Social Forum will be taking place from Fri. 17th October to Sunday 19th October 2003 in UCD Students Centre, and in Mother Redcaps, Dublin, and on the Sunday we will be having a Carnival 4 Change
- if you or your group would like to get involved, get on the mailing list, run a workshop etc then drop me an email. The website will be updated in the next week with the 1st ISF programme details - plenary titles and speaker details, workshop details etc etc.
all the best,
Barry.
Thanks Barry. I am not one of the organisers of the above meeting, but I know one of the people involved and just posted the Press Release she sent me. I am involved in the defend free speech group, who will have a speaker at the meeting. I will bring up your information at the meeting so that people are aware about what is going on around the country. I don't know if there are plans to set up a group here, but I will let you know what happens.
