Discuss: The Regime Change in Iraq as an End in Itself

category international | anti-war / imperialism | opinion/analysis author Tuesday March 16, 2004 16:56author by Harpo G Report this post to the editors

Leave your politics at the door

Forget about Bush. Forget about Blair. Forget about oil. Forget about the motivation for the war.

Is Iraq a better place now that Saddam has been ousted and a replacement regime is being put in place?

The answer is not yet clear... but time will tell.

The occupying force is still there so we do not yet have a true and fair picture of what Iraq is like now compared to under Saddam and his family.

Here are some questions to consider when the time is right;

(i) has quality of life improved for the majority of Iraqi families?

(ii) are the majority of Iraqis more 'free' or less 'free' now than two years ago?

(iii) is the rest of the world (a) safer or (b) less safe since the war?

(iv) is the rest of the world (a) more free or (b) less free since the war?

(v) did Saddam deserve to be ousted / asassinated / voted out / otherwise removed from office?

The end DOES NOT justify the means or the argument. But that does not mean that we, as free-thinkers, cannot discuss the positive or negative outcomes.
