In today's Britain, you're more likely to be arrested for an offensive tweet than a burglary ? even though barely anyone gets charged and the public want police focused on real crime.

Israel's latest murderous PR disaster

metal darts from a tank shell killed Fadl Shanaa, a Reuters cameraman, as he was working in Gaza, doctors in the territory have said. Several of the 3cm-long darts, known as flechettes, were embedded in Shanaa's legs and chest, a medical examination showed on Thursday.

The darts were also discovered in his flak jacket.

The 23-year-old was killed on Wednesday along with two youths who were nearby as he covered one of the bloodiest days in Gaza for a month in which 16 other Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers died during heavy fighting.

Shanaa had left the vehicle he was travelling in to film Israeli tanks when he was killed.
He captured footage showing a tank firing the shell that killed him.
Markings on the vehicle that Shanaa was travelling in were emblazoned with "press" and "tv" and his flak jacket was clearly marked.
The Reuters news agency has called for a full inquiry by Israel's government and military authorities into the death.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) expressed deep concern about the use of antipersonnel weapons such as flechette shells in areas where civilians such as journalists were present

The Israeli army has expressed "sorrow" over the death of Shanaa. (yeah right!)

Looks like a bit of a PR disaster for the Israelis.
(1)You don't kill journalists and if you do,
(2)make sure you don't use horrific illegal weaponry to do so.

I hope the media respond appropriately to this

If you are in a combat zone when two sides are engaged in fighting you risk being hit or killed if you identity or intentions are unknown.
In combat you don't get a second chance if an enemy is close by who can kill you.
The tank crew saw a group of people in the open in the distance.
Just because the journalist was wearing these signs does not mean that the tank crew could assume he did not have hostile intent.
It was an honest mistake and these things happen in war unfortunately.

but no longer where the Israelis and Americans are occupying.

Interesting thing about the above youtube video is that I have not seen it on CNN Int'l nor BBCworld - but I have seen it on Hungary's HirTV as well as DemocracyNow (http://democracynow.org).

You would think the media would be interested in protecting their own - but today they are so embeded with the occupiers they will 'protect' the public from the images of their own reporters being slaughtered or imprisoned by 'friendly' forces.

By the way, Bilal Hussein was released yesterday from an American gulag in Iraq - after two years in jail, never even seeing a proper judge - probably just imprisoned for taking too many empathetic images during the US seige of Falujah.

'Associated Press photographer Bilal Hussein was reunited with family and colleagues Wednesday, ending more than two years in U.S. military custody after Iraqi judges dropped all legal proceedings against him.....'

If the media dont bother to show us images of their own being killed - why should we expect them to explain such things as the Lancet Report?

The MSM is, always has been and continues to be an essential part of the occupation(s).

Nothing on RTE as far as I know either. How surprising!

Aljazeera is still a good news station. They reported this extensively.

Also, one of their reporters, sami al hajj , has been in guantanamo for nearly six years now without trial

http://www.prisoner345.net/

no surprise the US took pot shots at their building that time!! They hate reporters who don't play ball.

However this wasn't al jazeera here, this was a reuters guy.

I must say, I'm very disappointed in the weak media response to this. As you said, what hope is there if they don't even defend their own anymore.

Mosh:
How blind are you??
A TANK versus a CAMERA?? Who do you think your talking to? All the Blah! Blah!
about "conflict zone" etc etc. It was a TANK a BIG MILITARY TANK looking down at a man with a CAMERA!!
Can you not ever say " A spade is a spade".?? How can you even dream of making an excuse for murderers?
Those soldiers in the tank murdered Fadel Sanah, with
only his camera in his hand! He was reporting on the 18 civilians that were murdered earlier in Gaza City
five which were children!! "Conflict Zone "who is making it a conflict zone??
Who gives the Israeili Military authority to cross into Gaza to slaughter children??
Who is there to protect and secure Palistinian Borders??
What military power do Palestinians have to protect themselves??
You are just SICK!! You make me SICK!!
Why dont you just go away and get lost you and your weasel words!!
