Under pressure from the US and other nuclear powers, Micheál Martin has agreed to a proposal allowing India - a non-signatory of the NPT - to engage in nuclear trade. This constitutes a shredding of Ireland's historic commitment to the NPT and shows that there is not a principle on earth on which our government isn't prepared to capitulate - presumably for the right price. Jump To Comment: 1Yes, of course Ireland's craven, cap-in-hand, take-me-anyway-you-want attitude to the braggart that is the US administration is political (and probably individual) cowardice of a shameful and deplorable order: but look, for God's sake, at the kinds of punch-up-in-the-pub-lavatory politicians we have running the gaff! I doubt that some of our politicians would know where Washington was on a map, but - in the absence of any ability to think for themselves, a Church-heavy education system having seen that off - they would still reckon that anything America wants America gets. Do we still labour with wringing hands the notion that our politicians represent, or can represent, us? Ireland bent over for the US and abandoned the NPT stance to let India in, but would open Shannon Airport to the US in the morning to invade Iran, which does not have nuclear weapons. Meanwhile US companies come in here, take the grants and the quick profit, then melt off into the cheaper flesh-pots of the Far East when their accountants tell them to. When, O God, will we ever learn! Or have we been so frequently abused by the US that we think we're having a normal relationship?
