No! Welcome 4 War Criminals/State mUrDeRers!

category antrim | anti-war / imperialism | press release author Monday October 27, 2008 17:52author by Maire - Ógra Shinn Féinauthor email osfnational at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

The Irish Republican Youth Movement, Ógra Shinn Féin, are set to join the march and rally in Belfast this weekend in opposition to the British MOD’s parade for the notorious UDR/RIR regiment of the British Army.

Demonstrators from across Ireland will join in solidarity with the relatives of victims of British State Murder and Collusion at Bank Square, 10.45am this Sunday 2 November. There will be a number of speakers including Mark Thompson of Relatives For Justice and Martina Anderson for Sinn Féin, before marching to Royal Avenue for a dignified and peaceful protest.

Encouraging maximum turnout National Organiser of Ógra Shinn Féin, Barry McColgan said,

“The British Army and UDR/RIR have a brutal and bloody legacy in Ireland, which has included internment without trial, torture, shoot to kill, and collusion with unionist death squads. The hundreds of families, who have lost loved ones through collusion and state murder have been ignored and shunned over this coat trailing exercise.”

“These families still have many unanswered questions regarding the British policy of Collusion in the North of Ireland, and to grant a ‘victory’ parade to a regiment notorious with collusion and state murder is insensitive in the extreme.”

“The UDR/RIR and British Army remain as an imperialist army of occupation in Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, and are part and parcel of the daily massacres in the Middle East. All right minded people who demand the truth on Collusion and are opposed to their ongoing illegal occupations should turn out to oppose this highly insulting ‘victory’ parade for war criminals, and state murderers.”

The brutalising tactics of the British Army received a little public attention recently in the matter of the unexplained deaths of young recruits at Deep Cut Barracks. This is now being washed under a tide of jingoism over 'our boys'. Young, under-educated people are tempted by British Army offers of training & adventure & even of doing good in benighted or war-torn countries, but soon find they have to fall in with the group mentality. A few people with violent tendencies love the idea of using a gun with approval, but the majority are unknowingly tools of the British (& lately, American) Government. Some ex-soldiers have come to realise the deadly charades they were sent to play. I can't hate anyone simply for wearing a British uniform.

all the brit gov wants is more and more war to keep their arms industry going and to create jobs for asbo youths, the saddest thing about the kids wearing the uniform is they can't even have any honour like thier grandads-when tommies in 1st and 2nd world war were asked why they did it they all said the same thing-for the women back home-wives,girfriends,Mothers-now when interviewed all the boys in afganistan say they do it for each other! pathetic! I almost feel sorry for them.

How can SF present this as an anti-war protest when they their leaders met with George Bush in belfast just after the 2003 invasion began and have met him on several occasions since? Why not boycott meetings with Tony Blair they man who sent these troops into battle? This is just an excercise in trying to keep people happy while SF administer British rule and its even more cynical because kids are going to get their heads burst in senseless sectarian rioting on Sunday.

Ógra SF have produced a fine quality film here in promoting their demo, a very slick production and v professional approach to campaigns.

Great to see opposition to these war criminals, they can't even get a parade in their own country.

Will Gerry Adams not be taking part in the protest? Apparently he is speaking in Sligo at SFs Euro North West selection convention. So presumably that also means that SF activists from all those counties, Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Longford and Westmeath, will also not be taking part in this protest.

Surely the convention could have been have being put back to another date? Which is more important?

The Ulster Star reported yesterday that the Mayor, of Lisburn ,Ronnie Crawford, has been trying unsuccessfully to get his town to hold a homecoming parade for troops . Perhaps if the issue had involved Lisbon rather than Lisburn the IAWM might have been able to work up some interest.

The front page of the IAWM's website currently has an article about an anti-war march which took place in Manchester a month ago and an article reprinted from the New York Times about the stock market crash -the NYT article doesn't make any association at all between financial crises and war. It seems perverse that the IAWM isn't publicising or mobilizing for the Belfast march . I suspect that the leadership of the organization is still too dominated by the SWP which doesn't want to give too much prominence to demos that have been organized by republicans .
