Yesterday saw the launch of "Beat the Boreholes"; a campaign of mass civil disobedience to stop Shell works in Mayo this Summer. At 7am in the morning campaigners entered the water in Broadhaven Bay in kayaks and a safety rib in a peaceful attempt to prevent Shell from bringing in a second borehole drilling platform. They were met with 5 Garda water unit boats, with approximately 16 Gardaí on board and 10 security boats. Campaigners attempted to approach the platform but were prevented from doing so by Gardaí who overturned their kayaks. Gardaí arrested 2 campaigners for minor Public Order offences and seized three kayaks, the safety rib & several paddles. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Climate camp will take place this year in County Tyrone, from the 12th to the 16th of August. The camp is taking place in support of the local community and their opposition to the proposed new A5. Climate Camp Ireland is a group of individuals that believe in taking direct action against the local causes of climate change. The Camp is open to anyone to attend, and will host numerous workshops on many aspects of climate change.

On Saturday July 3rd, Climate Campers took part in a rally organised by the Alternative A5 Alliance in the area surrounding Victoria Bridge, Co. Tyrone to mark their opposition to the planned building of a new dual carriageway. The rally was a silent and symbolic affair with a hearse carrying a coffin with flowers and wreaths. The coffin had a banner on it that read "Kill the road , not the environment". read full story / add a comment

The weekly Friday protests in Nabi Saleh against the theft of village land for the construction of the illegal Israeli "settler" colony of Halamish have the reputation as the most violent in the West Bank and yesterday's confirmed this hitherto perception: Once the peaceful demonstrators reached the line of army jeeps and soldiers blocking their passage, some were manhandled to the ground and coordinator of the protests; Bassem Tamimi received rough handling, later Jonathan Shapiro an Israeli with live conscience and strong for Palestine was violently arrested. read full story / add a comment

I and thousands of my neighbours in Ringsend, Irishtown and Sandymount have been objecting to the siting of this incinerator in our community for over 10 years we have never been complacent on the matter, we do not blog, although we have our own Internet site under the title of NODUBLININCINERATOR. Those who wish to keep up to date with our campaign can access the up to date info on the site. Last Saturday the Opinion& Analysis section of Irish Times, Stephen Collins had a article which questioned whether John Gormley had a conflict of interest when it came to dealing with the issue of the Poolbeg incinerator. I have replied to the ed, but as I doubt this letter will be printed I am adding it here. It appears that a lot of media will only print the outdated PR mantra that Dublin City Council continue to trot out. read full story / add a comment
