SIPTU is absolutely opposed to the lifting of the cap on University tuition fees proposed through the Browne review which could see fees soar to an extortionate rate of up to £12,000 per year. It beggars belief that these proposals be put forward at anytime, never mind in the depths of one of the harshest economic recessions. The Browne review or any other proposed hike in student or tuition fees can not be allowed to happen, this will only result in preventing thousands of young people from low to middle income earning families from going to University and in thousands more emigrating with little to no prospects here. read full story / add a comment

For your information, enter 'IMF and World Bank on way to Ireland' into google. See Brian Lenihan's statement, the second item down. It's been there in black and white since October. Another one of our best natural resources has just been sold off, this time it's our best natural resource, ourselves. We have been sold into bondage to the IMF. read full story / add a comment

TO: ALL MEMBERS RE: March for “A Better, Fairer Way” – Saturday 27th November, 11.30 a.m. Wood Quay, Dublin The country is in the throes of the most serious economic crisis in our history. This is because the Government allowed speculators, bankers and developers run riot. They then included useless institutions in a State Credit Guarantee Scheme, mortgaging all our futures. read full story / add a comment

"The whole scene appears like something from “Lord of the Rings”. Imagine it’s dark, real dark. On one side a happy, singing crowd, including some 70-year-olds and many teenies with colourful clothes, little fires to warm themselves....On the other side machines in fighting armour, truncheons, helmets and artificial light.....Machine-people who don’t move. Sauron has sent his Orcs...." read full story / add a comment

I just happen to work very near the Department of Finance and so I was a first hand witness to how events unfolded on November 3rd during the Students’ Protest. I came out to support the students -“hijack their protest” according to the lazy, subservient and incredibly pro-rich Irish mainstream media journalists, who are unable to understand a simple concept called “Solidarity”. read full story / add a comment

Anne Thompson SIPTU, Belfast SIPTU joined with thousands of other trade union members, workers and those currently struggling to get a job on the 23rd October at Belfast City Hall when the public made a clear stand against Tory government imposed cuts. The reckless slash and burn cuts by the Tory government will not as they claim, pave the way to recovery but rather lead the way to mass immigration and increase the extreme hardship faced by working families and the most marginalised and disadvantaged in society, while their banker mates are propped up by criminally extortionate salaries, bonuses and enhanced pensions enabled by the saviour of good honest tax payers monies - our money. read full story / add a comment

As Usual, Not much publicity at all on the MSM about this date..Obviously a date and a sentiment the establishment would like us to forget, but in light of the recent austerity measures both here and in Britain and the rise of the conservatives again as a force to be reckoned with in British politics, Here at indy, we think this event needs to be remembered. We kinda like the idea of somebody wiping out the whole rotten establishment in one fell swoop read full story / add a comment

OBama and his regime bailed out the rich in the last two years. Working peoples lives were getting harder and harder. the Union leaders backed the Obama regime. So many working people felt they had no other way to protest the Obama regime's right wing policies but to vote Republican. See the real mood in this article. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions is to “stage” a protest against budget cuts in Dublin on November 27th. For anyone keeping an eye on the unions’ shenanigans the word “stage” is quite appropriate – perhaps “stage-manage” would be even better. For these same union leaders have worked hand-in-hand with the current government in the greatest assault on Irish workers since the great lock-out of 1913. While that conflict paved the way for the 1916 rising, we can be quite sure that our current leaders and their cronies will do everything in their power to ensure that as little as possible changes this time round. read full story / add a comment

The events of the student march on Wednesday the 3rd of November were a turning point in the attitude of the state towards the general populace. As we look down the barrel of what is likely to be the harshest budget in the history of the country, the Government can no longer contain the anger of the Irish people. What happened on Wednesday was proof of this. read full story / add a comment

Peter Sutherland has thrown his considerable weight behind the bank bailouts, and has told us we need to tighten our belts to do it. This is the same Peter Sutherland who helped bail out Garret Fitzgerald while a director of Allied Irish Banks. This is the Garret Fitzgerald who has told us we need to be patriots by not disagreeing with the bank bailouts. That was Allied Irish Banks, the profit-privatising institution which is now socialising its losses on us. This is Peter Sutherland, Chairman of Goldman Sachs, one of the biggest bondholders of Allied Irish Banks' debt, and thus one of the biggest potential beneficiaries of the bank bailouts. Hello? Is anyone reading this? Anyone in the media? The Dáil? Anyone? read full story / add a comment
