The past week has shown the extent to which Shannon airport has been deliberately run down as a civilian airport and turned into a US military airbase. I spent over two hours there each day, Wed 4th, Friday 6th and Sunday 8th. During these times, the number of aircraft tansiting the airport associated with the US military exceeded civilian passenger aircraft. Aer Lingus, Ryanair and Air France are gradually abandoning services from Shannon while its use as a military airbase is increasing. read full story / add a comment

For years now, we have been reading about plans for the Leinster Orbital Route (LOR) or Dublin Outer Orbital Route (DOOR). Earlier this year, the NRA published a Feasibility Report from 2007, which shows route of the LOR passing along the side of the Hill of Tara. Notably, the route goes about 1km north of the Blundelstown Interchange, between the N3 and M3 motorway. However, last week Meath County Councillors were told to freeze planning on a 2km corridor on either side of the route. So, it is possible the route will pass directly through the Blundelstown Interchange, the Hill of Tara complex and the proposed UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, it appears that this was the plan all along, and that the route has been chosen before the public consultation even begins. read full story / add a comment

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign will be taking part in this year’s International Week of Solidarity called by the Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign (http://www.stopthewall.org). Our aim is to promote as many different voices showing solidarity with the Palestinian people as possible, and to raise awareness among mainstream Irish civil society of Israel’s apartheid policies, the ongoing plight of Palestinians, and their heroic struggle to resist ethnic cleansing. To this end we will be hosting film screenings, public meetings and fundraisers in Cork, Tullamore, Limerick, Belfast, Maynooth, Galway, Kilkenny, Derry and Dublin. Please refer to the brochure for full details of the events ( Link: http://ipsc.ie/pdf/wos2009brochure.pdf ) - and please try to come along and/or get involved! read full story / add a comment

The Community Development Alliance has set up a new agency to protect the most vulnerable people in Ireland. CAMA aims to protect the Community Development Projects that are being closed down at a time when their services are most needed. Community Development Projects give a voice to those people and communities who consistently experience poverty; we empower people to set up the services, politics and programmes aimed at reducing poverty and inequality. CAMA aims to articulate and protect those those voices. read full story / add a comment

At about 5pm this evening as the closing plenary of what can only be seen as a very disapointing climate talks in Barcelona, 2 people got up with a banner and walked toward the front stage shouting "Markets are the problem, not the solution". The banner appears to have read "Obama is finishing what Bush started". They were quickly jumped upon by security guards at the conference and wrestled to the ground. A third person stood up and came to their aid, it appears she was taken away from the plenary by the security guards. All three were evicted from the conference, no arrests were made. read full story / add a comment

An Bord Pleanala announced on Tuesday a deferral of the decision on the Corrib Gas onshore Pipeline, citing 14 conditions which cast huge doubt over claims from Shell that the project is safe. In the third delay on the decision regarding this pipeline, which was originally due on August 10, the Bord have highlighted hugely important safety concerns which are at the heart of the community's objections to the imposition of the Corrib Gas Project on the area. read full story / add a comment

This week (monday 2 - friday 6) the Barcelona International Climate Change Talks are happening, five days of formal negotiations, in the lead up to COP 15. Since Saturday there have been a series of actions in the cities streets as well as at the conference centre to raise awereness, to unite eco movements and to try to force change during this window of opportunity in the conference centre at the far side of Montjuic. But will it be enough to get us out of our AGE OF STUPID? Perhaps not, news has just come through today that African countries have abandoned the talks. Talks Timeline Saturday - Manifestation in Barcelona streets - The climate is not for sale Sunday - Outdoor film screening in city streets - 11th hour - Age of Stupid - Eco hopes Monday - TckTckTck wake up call for climate talks - Anarchist night greeting Tuesday - Africa boycott U.N. climate talks, demands CO2 cuts read full story / add a comment

This morning An Bord Pleanala have announced that they are deferring the decision on the onshore section of the Corrib Gas pipeline. Bord Pleanala says that approximately 5.6km (or 62% of the whole onshore pipeline) is considered unacceptable because of its proximity to dwelling houses located within its hazard range should a pipeline failure occur. See the latest RTE news report on this here: http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/1103/corrib.html or Irish Times report: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1103/...0.htm More on the Bord Pleanala decision will follow later, this is a report on yesterdays People's Forum in Belmullet and Minister's Forum in Corran Buí. read full story / add a comment

On Wednesday 28th October 2009 Berlanty Azzam, originally from Gaza but studying at Bethlehem University, was arrested at a military checkpoint between Bethlehem and Ramallah. She was then loaded onto an Israeli military jeep - blindfolded and handcuffed - and moved from Bethlehem to Gaza - against her will. When they arrived at the Gaza border around 11:00pm, she was released into the dark and told only, “You are in Gaza.” Berlanty was just two months away from graduating from Bethlehem University with a degree in business studies, now she is imprisoned in one of the world’s most deadly conflict zones. read full story / add a comment

Management at Green Isle still refuse to engage with TEEU, LRC, NIB, or Labour Court. This despite the fact that they have accepted Irish State Aid to the tune of €43,000,000.
