Brian Crowley MEP: With all respect, Mr. President, you will not tell me what the Irish think. As an Irishman, I know it best.
President Vaclav Klaus: I do not speculate about what the Irish think. I state the only measurable data which were proved by the referendum...
... If Mr. Crowley speaks of an insult to the Irish people, then I must say that the biggest insult to the Irish people is not to accept the result of the Irish referendum. In Ireland I met somebody who represents a majority in his country. You, Mr. Crowley, represent a view which is in minority in Ireland. That is a tangible result of the referendum. read full story / add a comment

1987 saw the French state arrest four members of the former libertarian communist armed group Action Directe who were then charged & sentenced to life imprisonment for a career of terrorist assassinations mostly targetted against business individuals during the period of '79 to '87.

Last year Jean-Marc Rouillan was allowed "semi-liberty" probation status outside of prison. Then he gave an interview to the French "L'Express" newspaper exalting terrorism and armed struggle. read full story / add a comment

The occupation is organised by the campaigning group, Free Education for Everyone (FEE), and is part of a national day of protest across the country against fees organised by FEE. Protests are also planned in Cork and Galway today. read full story / add a comment

The recently launched "Doodle 4 Google" campaign is a slick method of promoting Google to school children, without their consent, and usually without the consent of their parents. It is a scheme that is heavy on Google brand recognition, but very low on curricular relevance; this is something that CCFE has come to expect from commercial schemes that are promoted in schools. read full story / add a comment

The official story is that the origins of the current crisis lie in the collapse of the US subprime mortgage market - i.e. poor people not paying their mortgages. Although this may have been the trigger event, it is not the real cause. The real cause lies in pyramids not houses. Specifically the enormous debt pyramid built up by the Western countries, particularly those following the Anglo-saxon economic model - which, unfortunately for us, includes Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Pat Breen, Fine Gael TD from Bunratty, showed that he's been listening to the lies about natural resources, and he believes them, when he spoke about Corrib in the Dáil.

The sad thing is that his acceptance of the nonsense peddled by Shell and the Green Party means that instead of an opposition testing and challenging the government we have a docile and pointless group of placemen waiting for a chance to get into government simply to get a few things for their constituents and jobs for their friends. read full story / add a comment

On October 22nd, in the biggest show of student strength in many years, over 15,000 third level students marched through the streets of Dublin. They were united in their opposition to the Budget’s 67% College Registration Fee increase and Minister for Education, Batt O’Keefe’s threat to bring back full college fees by September 2009. Last month, he announced that the return of fees would raise €530 million in revenue at a family income threshold of €120,000. To his embarrassment, he later had to admit that these figures were wrong and that in fact the maximum revenue would be only €130 million. read full story / add a comment

“This Budget serves no vested interest. Rather, it provides an opportunity for us all to pull together and play our part according to our means so that we can secure the gains which have been the achievement of the men and women of this country. It is, a Cheann Comhairle, no less than a call to patriotic action.”

With these words, Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan concluded his Budget speech in the Dáil on Tuesday 21st October. Just a week later Lenihan and his colleagues were left in no doubt whatsoever what people thought of his ‘call to patriotic action’ read full story / add a comment
