"Sin City," ? only when Ahern and coven come to Galway for the races and a serious outbreak of brown envelopery consequently emanates from the Ballybrit "Hospitality Tent" which can only be controlled by CAB?.

"Sin City"," nah !, 'cos sometimes, in moments of weakness, Galway is referred to as the New Jerusalem,? true.

Besides the odd bi-pedal weasel, the overwhelming public response to our daily protest outside Lynch's castle in Shop street, engenders more and more of the same,so, tomorrow and Saturday, we'll be at it again.

At the High Court on Monday 31st July, members of Bantry Concerned Action Group were about to issue proceedings under section 160 of the Planning Act against the ESB, arguing that the powerline proposed in Bantry is currently an unauthorised development.

The proceedings were providing a welcome respite for protesters to so far have successfully blocked the ESB from continuing work along the route of the powerline. Farmers along the route assisted by members from the Solidarity Camp had successfully blocked numerous efforts by the ESB to off-load poles, bring diggers on-site etc. The exercise, according to the ESB, cost them €15,000 each day, with virtually no results for all their efforts. At time of writing, all machinery and equipment has been removed from the area.

Over 300 farmers from as far apart as Malin Head in Donegal and Wexford assembled for a rally in Bantry to support over twenty local farmers preventing the ESB from laying an overhead powerline across their lands.

After the rally, the group marched through Bantry, stopping for a while outside a hotel being constructed by Murnane and O'Shea, the businessmen behind the windfarm project who are demanding that overhead powerlines cross 40 farms over a 14km route

Farmers in Bantry have were astonished to find a letter in the planning office from Mary Coughlan, Minister for Agriculture making representations on behalf of Bob Murnane who is currently seeking planning permission to extend the size of a controversial windfarm near Bantry.

The Ballybane windfarm being developed by local businessmen Murnane and O’Shea requires a grid connection to a sub-station 14 kilometres away. Over twenty farmers along the route have been blockading the ESB to prevent them from constructing overhead powerlines.

From Madrid to Buenos Aires, from Caracas to la Paz, throughout the spanish speaking world - governments and political representatives send messages of "get well soon!" to Fidel Castro who has now placed the ink stamp of leadership in the hands of his younger brother Raul.

The health of Fidel Castro is intrinsically tied to the health of the state of Cuba. & he's an old man now just short of his 80th birthday. He is in fact the "grand old man".
& his death will see many changes long expected and equally as long feared. Already Cuban exile groups mostly found in Florida USA, led by the charismatic Gloria Estafan have announced plans to democratise the state when he goes, and modernise it in the best shiney way turning the clock back as far it will go. read full story / add a comment

AT THE Stop the War Coalition (STWC) Steering Committee on 15 July in London a resolution was moved by a UNISON delegate on developments in Italy and, in particular, the left party Communist Refoundation (RC).

The resolution "noted with grave concern" the decision of the RC to vote with Prodi's government coalition to maintain Italian troops in Afghanistan, correctly stating that this would be a "blow to the anti-war movement in Italy and across the world."
