The event commemorates an incident in 1849 where starving victims of the Great Hunger were forced to walk through a night of freezing snow in the hope of receiving food aid from the British authorities. Estimates vary of how many people died on the death march and shortly after, but the night is still remembered as an occasion of terrible loss of life in the area.

Young republicans from the Lurgan area engaged with local students today the 22nd May, in remembrance of the 1981 Hunger Strike. A leaflet drop at a local high school saw hundreds of students given information leaflets about the Hunger Strike and details about the developing Ógra group in the area.

Activists were met enthusiastically, with some students requesting further leaflets for friends and family. read full story / add a comment

The decision by Mr Prodi to honour the public will of the Italian people and withdraw the Italian presence in Iraq, and also to describe the war as "illegal" and a "mistake" has allowed Italians to give more attention to the manipulation of information during the Berlusconi years and return to the causes of Italian casualties & hostages during the Iraq war. The most senior officer of the Italian forces to be killed was Nicola Calipari of the Italian secret service who was shot by the US army.

on the 4th of March 2004, after one month spent in captivity, Giuliana Sgrena a journalist of the italian newspaper "il Manifesto" was released after negotiations had been opened by Calipari and brought to "safety". Their route had been communicated to their US coalition partners before hand. It is important to remember that the murder of Calipari and his subsequent state funeral prompted Berlusconi to first suggest the withdrawl of troops, but unconstitutionally, as he made the offer through his own TV station & not in parliament. Giuliana Sgrena has now published a book on her experiences & granted an interview, which I am reproducing in english translation here. read full story / add a comment

After spending a long week outside St. Patricks Cathedral Anarchist Youth yesterday held a film showing to allow everyone to relax. We chose to show the major hollywood film "V For Vendetta" for free as we are opposed to the idea of entertainment as a commodity and intellectual property laws that outlaw downloading and sharing information (movies, music, games, software).

The following is the basic text of a talk given before the film. read full story / add a comment

REPORT FROM WARSAW - POLAND

Few days ago, on 16th of May, in the evening, an antifasciscist activist was attacked by two nazis, with clear intentions to kill him. They have been following him, and, suddenly one of them steped in front on him and used a pepper gas on him. Then the other one stabbed him in his back with 30cm long knife. Maciek fell on the ground and was kicked by the nazis for a while, with them shouting "We'll kill you, you leftist motherfucker!". read full story / add a comment
