Sometime ago, retired Justice Kinlan wrote a damning report on our prisons. McDowell, Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform, went into a 'huff'. He accused Justice Kinlan of being out to get him. The question remains:- A young man was brutally murdered in a cell while five prisoners looked on. Six people sharing one cell.....this had to end in disaster at some stage. read full story / add a comment

The Scariest thing in Derry this Halloween “Last night I watched our city stagger out of the bars and clubs. Broken bottles and cut eyes. Girls in bright clothes taunting boys with gold rings. I stood there for hours listening as it turned blunt and angrily cast around for the wrong look or a flicker of fear to attack. A publication called Centre Focus is a regular newspaper funded by FAS. It uses as an office the Centre for The unemployed North Main st. The building is owned by Cork Council of Trade unions. In a series of tabloid style articles it has raised concerns about sterotyping and attackiing those that are involved in progressive activist work and in particular the greater understanding between different ethnic and religous groups. Many complaints have been made about its editorial style but why is it not being discussed on a wider format.? read full story / add a comment

10% are not. Of that 10%- There is a disparity in the care of Irish Children and in the caring for Children who are separated from their Parents becuase of the Asylum Process. Of That 10%- The reports say that there is an increasing use of restraints. Of that 10%- No home has been found for them Mary Rafferty in the Irish Times published an appalling indictment of the State approach to care of the most vulnerable in Irish Society. Lenihan was last seen in Geneva being carpetted because the rights of the Child are not transposed into our constitution- though we signed onto it. read full story / add a comment

Social mobility is the amount which an individual in a given society can change their social status, or class, throughout their life. Under modern western capitalism we are told that through hard work, study and dedication we can all become wealthy and successful. Some even go so far as to say that we no longer live under a class system, as our social-status is purely the product of our own actions. It is 93 years since two of Ireland's greatest republican socialists, James Connolly and James Larkin, led what became known as the Dublin lockout. The bosses 'locked out' thousands of workers for the heinous crime of defending their rights as workers and seeking union protection. While this may seem like a very long time ago, the struggle for workers rights on this island has not disappeared nor should it. What the lockout represented was an organised attempt to undermine the systematic exploitation of Irish workers. In 2006 that reality is still amongst us. Workers are effectively seen as a necessary evil to help the capitalist classes to achieve maximum profits. One key difference exists between now and 1913. While in 1913 the bosses were shielded by the existence of a British imperialist administration, they are now aided by an industrial relations tool which has actually been endorsed by many unions. Basque political prisoner Iñaki de Juana’s hunger strike has been in the media in recent weeks. After 63 days on hunger strike demanding justice and attending the numerous requests he received and the mobilisation of Basque society, De Juana ended his protest. He began his hunger strike due to the attempt by the Spanish State Prosecution to get him sentenced to 96 years in jail for writing two press articles. read full story / add a comment

Todays Papers state the Pope Benedict will visit the North of Ireland Next year. He is to be Invited to beatify Saint Columbana. The proposed visit is being requested by Dr Martin and envisages also a joint visit by HRH The Queen. The most recent report of Pope Benedict was a couple of days ago , when he deplored the activities of the Fern's Priests who got away with child abuse and tortured a generation of Irish Children. Barry became world famous in the late 1990's as the animal rights prisoner on hunger strike against animal experiments, but this was just one side to his long career in animal activism. Barry was a committed vegan and took part in campaigns against all animal abuse; he was a hunt saboteur for many years; he was an ALF activist who personally rescued many animals from a terrible fate, he was convicted for an attempt to rescue one of the last dolphins to be kept in captivity in the UK.; He was also one of the movements most prolific economic saboteurs causing millions of pounds of damage to animal abusing companies and individuals; He worked and lived at various animal sanctuaries around the country; he did street stalls and produced newsletters and leaflets. Bertie Ahern wants to throw out the 'stupid ol' pencils,' and bring in electronic voting. But we would be stupider than the pencils if we fall for this. Decisions by many US states to convert to electronic voting machines have yielded new concerns about whether they are secure and accurate, about paper records as backup proof and -- this year -- about whether the electronic or paper record should be considered the official tally if a candidate demands a recount. And on a Utube video, a computer software expert and whistleblower reveals to a congressional committee how he was asked to design a simple system to rig electronic votiing in Florida. And it wasn't hard to flip a 51/49 vote either way, with no one the wiser. when electronic voting is brought in the door, democracy goes out the window. read full story / add a comment

As coalition policy reaches a crisis, may I resurrect an idea? It offers a way out of the current debate whether to "stay the course" (as President George W. Bush has long advocated) or to withdraw troops on a short timetable (as his critics demand). My solution splits the difference, "Stay the course – but change the course." I suggest pulling coalition forces out of the inhabited areas of Iraq and redeploying them to the desert. read full story / add a comment

The Cabinet decided to disallow Romanian and Bulgarian workers to work in this economy for seven years after the accession of these two states to the EU on January first 2007. The country took one step closer to water privatisation recently with the announcement that Celtic Anglian Water have landed the contract for the Waste Water Treatment Plant, part of the Waterford Main Drainage Project. The Irish Examiner described them as ‘the international division of Anglian Water’. However, a quick scan of the company’s website tells a different story, Anglian water have only a 50% stake. ‘Celtic Anglian water’ (CAW), is listed on the NTR (national toll roads) website as a subsidiary company.
