The island of Martinique is in the Carribean sea where reggae, voodoo, rum & hurricanes come from. It is also an integral part of France and as such its map appears on Euro bank notes at the bottom in a little insert. Four months ago the people of Martinique and neighbouring Gaudelope paralysed their local economies with strike actions, civil unrest, general un-mellowness and all round anti-Sarkozy attitude. This was in no small part due to their extraordinarily high levels of unemployment compared to the rest of France. Today Sarkozy has started a tour of "overseas France" and has proposed a referendum on autonomy but not independence. read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather writes on the developing situation in Iran, on howdivisions are developing amongst the Mullahs and most importantly on the class composition of the demonstrations. Full text at link.

The problem with most dictators is that, even in their dying days, they believe they can stop the movement by simply passing orders or blaming ‘foreign powers’. Some supporters of the shah are still under the illusion that he was not overthrown by the 1979 Iranian revolution, but was deposed thanks to a plot by Britain and the US. In fact, as he went on speaking, attributing strange comments to Obama (the US president has apparently admitted in public that he had been looking forward to the demonstrations that have rocked Iran), one wondered if Khamenei, well known for using opium as a painkiller for his injured arm, had taken a double dose that morning. read full story / add a comment

Our first engagement with the council as newly elected councillors was an induction session where we met the main management team of the council and were briefed on meetings, facilities, positions etc.
Dublin City Council is a huge organisation and has a beurocracy to match. But what alarmed me mostly was the horse-trading for positions that goes on among the elected councillors themselves. read full story / add a comment

In this article Yassamine Mather writes about the mass demonstrations in cities across Iran. She points out that these demonstrations show the anger and frustration of the majority of Iranians with political Islam. Full text at link.

Early on Saturday morning, the supreme leader congratulated Ahmadinejad, which was seen as official endorsement of the results. But by Sunday pm, under the pressure of impromptu demonstrations, he was forced to reverse this decision, and called on the council of guardians to investigate the other candidates’ complaints. By Monday June 15, with a massive show of force by the opposition - over a million demonstrators on the streets - he was instructing the council of guardians to call for a recount. By Tuesday there was talk of new elections. read full story / add a comment

Just before you reach for your pay-4-view digital TV zapper and start flicking through the Italian news channels to find coverage of these latest revealations, let me tell you, if indeed you needed to know, that Berlusconi's media empire have hidden the story from Italian viewers salicious and prurient interest.

Nonetheless, Patrizia D'Addario, an experienced sex worker of certain allure & also a candidate in Berlusconi's party for the municipal government of Bari, attended a court hearing investigating charges of corruption laid against one of Mr B's party who doesn't have immunity yesterday. She brought along half a dozen video and audio recordings, in the best tradition of citizen journalism recorded on her mobile phone which attested to Mr B's escort service habit.

Mr B has flown off to meet Obama, the first time they share space since the queen of Engurland ticked Berlusconi off at the G20 gig in April. Their one hour meeting will be had through interpreters since neither speaks the same language or lingo. But before he boarded the plane quipping &/or gaffing yesterday that he was going to Washington "handsome and tanned", he did open a new can of worms so interesting that it merited pick-up in today's Irish Independent and prompted a thoughtful analysis from the Italian "Repubblica" journalist Ezio Mauro, a complete of translation of which to English is reproduced below. It seems despite winning the EU election Mr B really is realising he's on the way out. & now rather than it all being a "leftwing" plot, a "rightwing" name has entered the picture. read full story / add a comment

Iranian Secret Police have fired on the crowds protesting against the stealing of the Presidential election. Mir Hossein Mousavi, the "defeated" oresidential candidate had previously addressed the crowd. The demonstrators gathered in Tehran's Revolution Square, chanting pro-Mousavi slogans as riot police menaced them. "Mousavi we support you. We will die, but retrieve our votes," they shouted, many wearing the green of Mousavi's election campaign.

And Mr Mousavi eventually appeared, addressing the crowd from the roof of his car. "The vote of the people is more important than Mousavi or any other person," he told his supporters. Before Mr Mousavi arrived, Reuters reported that his supporters had scuffled with stick-wielding men on motorcycles - apparently supporters of the president. read full story / add a comment

Western Australia's Attorney General is looking at whether the government can and should terminate a prison transport company's contract in the wake of a scathing coroner's report. The State Coroner Alastair Hope examined the death of an Aboriginal elder in the back of a prison van. Mr Ward was transported across Western Australia from the city of Laverton to Kalgoorlie, a mostly desert region know as Goldfields. Temperatures were recorded at 47º on the day. Although there was no airconditioning he was given 600ml of water to ease his suffering and ensure a comfortable 250 mile or 400 km journey.

He died of heatstroke. read full story / add a comment

A Spanish bakery accused of barbaric behaviour towards an illegal worker will face "the full weight of the law", the Spanish government has vowed. The statement comes amid shock over the case of a Bolivian worker whose arm was cut off in an accident at work. Bosses at the bakery in Valencia are accused of dumping him 100m (330 feet) from a hospital entrance and throwing him severed limb in a rubbish bin.

Mr Rilles was allegedly warned by the son of the bakery owner not to tell doctors where his accident had taken place, and was left a distance of some 100m from the hospital entrance, while bleeding heavily. Mr Rilles, 33, worked had 12-hour days at the bakery, earning 23 euros a day (£20; $32) under no contract. read full story / add a comment
