Yet again the US Occupation Forces have launched an attack on The Iraq Freedom Congress.

In another poor move; the occupying troops has made another attempt to eliminate the voice of freedom from Iraq by raiding the IFC headquarter in Baghdad on 12 February when they forced themselves in, verbally and physically assaulted the guards and stood them out in the rain for several hours. It is understood from the many previous incidents that these attempts are not to look for weapons or investigations regarding terrorist activities; but in fact they are to intimidate and eliminate any voice that objects the occupation and its puppets.

James Turley writes on how in Respect Chris Bambery claimed that Secularism ‘justifies’ islamophobia. Yet now Socialist Worker demands separation of church and state.

Bambery writes on islamophobia in media and establishment reactions to the speech. The Sun’s “bash the bishop” campaign and David Blunkett’s reference to something “external to this country” is a breath away from “there ain’t no black in the union jack”. The article implies that the pro-islam stance of the SWP has hardened since the break with Galloway. He writes that in spite of talk of muslim ‘backwardness’, many of the foundations of science were commonplace in islamic culture by the middle ages. True -science would not be doing well without the concept of zero. But it buys into the logic of the ‘clash of civilisations’. The idea of religions competing in some cosmic dog-show for the prize of ‘most progressive’ is ridiculous in itself without Bambery on the judges’ panel. read full story / add a comment

Catherine Nevin’s appeal against her conviction for murder began in the Court of Appeal yesterday. Ms Nevin was convicted in 2000 of the murder of her husband Tom at their pub, Jack White's Inn, Brittas Bay, on March 19, 1996. The appeal will be based on evidence that prosecutors failed to disclose at her original trial that witnesses , William McClean and former provos Gerry Heapes and John Jones ,were long-standing police informers . Nevin’s lawyer ,Anne Fitzgibbon , is seeking access to classified documents including security files which indicate that Mr McClean was a suspect in the Dublin/Monaghan bombings of 1974.

While many Indymedia readers are probably not fans of any of the prospective presidential candidates in the US, I thought this analysis of the coverage was quite interesting and worth putting up. While I don't agree with all the points made, it does provide some interesting and disturbing commentary on the media coverage, and the way in which feminisation of the candidates is seen as a way of degrading them (particularly in relation to Clinton, of course). While I'm not her greatest fan, I do think some of the points made here and the examples given show how deep the distrust of female leadership still goes in Western society. Obama has faced some ethnocentric bias too, but it seems his charisma and gender are saving him from the worst of it. read full story / add a comment

Exciting news! Pamela Anderson was in Paris yesterday where she launched a news conference to expose Canada’s heartbreaking seal hunt.

The news conference took place at the headquarters of Foundation Bridget Bardot and was literally covered with reporters from across Europe brining much needed attention to the plight of the seals, she later delivered a letter to the Canadian Ambassador in France urging him to put pressure on his government in Canada the very ones who lie to the public and the media and who tell people everything is really ok! She also spoke with Bridget Bardot from her home in St Tropez, Bridget Bardot was the Pamela Anderson of the 60’s and 70’s a super international celebrity who is now in her 70’s and still campaigning for animals.

President Bush has signed an executive order which will allow the US military to shoot down one that country's satelites before its diminishing orbit means the loss of the Hydragin gas it holds.

They say they're doing this to safeguard lives. Hydragin as we all might guess is a very dangerous substance. They're not saying they're doing this to have a bit of practise at a remarkably difficult exercise they have not officially admitted to having done before. For many good reasons such as incapability, implausibility and the usual reliable Star Wars diplomacy crap.
