Barcelona's offer to host a peace conference in 2005 has been rejected by Ariel Sharon. This marks a rejection of the Sharon administration of centring peace efforts on the Barcelona process, which the EMP (The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership) is usually known by. The EMP reflects the reality of Israel's geographical location as a state of the Mediterranean and one who trades with the EU. It also reflects the reality of Israel's demographic origins, Isreal is a European nation, the vast majority of whom are descended from European jews. The dictatorship of Libya is not participating in the EMP. Today Tony Blair on a visit to the region has proposed holding a conference in London in 2005. This supports the joint US/UK strategy as announced at the Bush & Blair press conference which followed the death of Arafat at Percy hospital in Paris and his burial ceremony in Cairo. read full story / add a comment

H.E. Mary Mc Aleese, President of Ireland, an Uachtaran has called [as is her perogative under the constitution (a.k.a. the little blue book)] a meeting of the Council of State to consider and moot the proposals of the Mammy Harney who maybe some day a "Granny Harney"' :- that pensioners of the 2nd richest state in the EU forced to pay 80% of their state pensions to the cost of public nursing homes. (The 2nd richest state in the EU bit is standard PD propaganda and media manipulation). This is reading and optional video material suitable for intermediate and upper intermediate level, standard Irish media accent. Just follow the link and download the national broadcasting networks audio file and watch the Irish TV. This is also educational material suitable for "civics" students and those abroad who are considering living or working in the EU state of Ireland. there may be a test issued later, we're not on holidays yet. read full story / add a comment

No one expects Mr Bush to weaken his support for a project that has become an article of faith among many Republicans. by Robert Fisk The Independent [UK] December 15, 2004 Baha Mousa, 26, was working as a hotel receptionist in Basra 14 months ago when British troops surrounded the building and arrested seven men. They were taken to a British base and were reportedly hooded and beaten. Two days later, Mousa was dead. His family was given $3,000 in compensation and rejected a further $5,000. What they wanted was justice. Yesterday, after more than a year of official stonewalling, his relatives won a 'historic' ruling to force the MoD to hold an independent inquiry. Will the truth now be known? read full story / add a comment
