The sugar tax sums up Britain's descent into a technocratic dystopia, says Dr David McGrogan. While our Government does almost nothing well, it remains a world-leader in passive-aggressive, surreptitious nudging.

The US-UK trade deal announced today is a clear win for Trump, says Sam Ashworth-Hayes, leaving the UK worse off than in March and opening up UK markets in exchange only for reducing recently imposed tariffs.

As in Canada, so in Australia, the crushing defeat of the conservative Liberal Party by Labour has been widely blamed on Trump. But in truth, Peter Dutton and his team only have themselves to blame, says Prof James Allan.

Iran: War threat remains real

category international | anti-war / imperialism | other press author Monday December 22, 2008 15:21author by pat c Report this post to the editors

Torab Salehi addressed the agm of HOPI Britain on the continuing threat of Imperialist aggression towards Iran. Here are some extracts from his speech. Full article at link.

What we said and should continue saying is very simple: to build an effective and broad campaign opposing US war against Iran means we should not align ourselves with those who in the name of support for the Iranian people are actually aiding the plans of US imperialism to control and dominate the Middle East. Nor should we align ourselves with those who in the name of anti-imperialism and anti-US militarism, apologise for the Iranian mullahs’ theocratic hold on power. To this day, not one of our critics have given a straight answer as to why this statement is wrong.

None of us are saying there will be another world war in five years time, but if during a period of global economic growth and relative peace US imperialism was busy building military bases around the Middle East, do you think in a period of decline, when its interests are more likely to be challenged, it will not become an even more blatant force of aggression against the people of the region? In the course of the coming period we must therefore expect to see a more belligerent and aggressive imperialism.

We therefore insist once again that the threat is real, it is already there and it is being used against the Iranian people on a daily basis. We must not only continue to campaign and mobilise against this threat and demand an immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all imperialist forces from the region, but further increase our efforts to oppose imperialist sanctions - sanctions which hurt most of all those who are the only real force for change.

It's about time a HOPI leader urged the ending of all HOPI alingment with pro US groups. It is certainly overdue but when I hear 'should ' instead of 'definitely will not', I wonder if this is not simply a fop to those who have claimed for a long time that HOPI is just another string in the bow of the 'US imperialism' and it's psychological build up to a war against the Islamic Republic of Iran. We will judge HOPI by how it acts, not what it proclaims.

The language of 'Should' is often linked with a 'But' reason for not doing something. At this time of year we are all familiar with people who say they should give up smoking or some other bad habit but cannot for one reason or another. They know they should but they can't and they want to be seen to be trying because they are embarassed by the public perception of their actions.

Never mind 'Should' stop standing beside pro US groups, just stop it!

And now we have HOPI attacking Channel 4 for planning to broadcast a statement from the Iranian president over the Christmas period. Say's all about HOPI, opposed to freedom of speech .They are no more than CIA hacks. A conduit for neo-con propaganda.
